Disc Jockeys Ban Pretenders
I was listening to the radio the other night, and I learned that The Pretenders songs have been removed from the playlist at dozens of radio stations across the U.S., due to Chrissie Hynde's statements regarding the war in Iraq.

This is apparently being driven by St. Louis-Missouri* based morning drive-time DJs Steve and DC, who are about as obnoxious and stupid as possible. The format of their flagship station here, and of their affiliate stations, mostly located in small markets, tends toward eighties music.

They play an audio clip of the announcement of the banning almost hourly.

I find this sort of chilling. Anyone else feel this way?

Wheren't the Pretenders big in the 80s? BTW this isn't chilling at all. Big corporations don't like contrivorsies of any sorts. As a general rule if someone or something causes controversy then they get dropped like a rock.

If you are in the business of selling something (in this case music) then you should be concerned with the needs and desires of your costumers more then making political statements.

But they aren't just dropping the Pretenders from the line up. They play clips from the morning show announcing that the Pretenders will no longer be played at any of the affiliate stations. They pride themselves on their censorship.

They're creating the controversy, as I doubt most people know about or even care about what Chrissie Hynde thinks about war.

Are Pretenders pro- or anti-war? What genre are they in? (Though knowing what gets played on the radio, they must be in the Suck genre.)

The Pretenders aren't anything. Chrissie Hynde, their lead singer, is against the war.

From bn.com:

Quote:
A sleek, stylish fusion of Stonesy rock & roll, new wave pop, and pure punk aggression, Pretenders is teeming with sharp hooks and a viciously cool attitude
They're probably best known for "Back on the Chain Gang".

And their hair is actually subdued compared to their contempories.

They just played here in Portland....the review I heard on the radio said that Chrissie acted like a real shitbird and played pretty well, but was generally surly and rude to the audience.
I do like her new song.."Complex Person"...nice reggae style beat.
And, if you listen to their music, they had some really original and well done music. Never owned any of their albums...but a better than average band for the 80's (which may not say a whole lot).

ok they're against. big suprise.

Boy I hate it when people do things like this. It makes us pro-war (I'm not pro-war- just anti- Hussein ) people look bad.

Give her freedom of speech dammit! no one really cares what anti-war protestors have to say anyways

I don't know if I find it chilling, more like really stupid. It's a bit like the british people that killed german shepherds in 1914 because they where "german".

And also a note to Oerdin: Is this really the chase? I've not heard anything about banning Michael Jackson songs for example just because he might be a pervert.

The opening theme for Rush Limbaugh's radio is from a Pretenders' song. Chrissy Hynde has more talent than a lot of the singers out there. Very emotional.

I've never heard them described as 'Big Hair' -- if anything, they're a throwback to the sixties.

This album is good for someone who wants to know what they're about:

The pretenders were and are a magnificent band from the eighties that combined punk sentiment with new-wave sensibilities. As such, I love them. Chrissy Hynde is increidble!

The eighties was the second best decade for music, no doubt!

This is what the so-called 'greatest democracy on Earth' does? You censor those who do not agree with the official line? Does anyone else think that this is almost like a form of modern day McCarthyism?

Considering that private entities have the right to say what they please, no.

It's actually freedom of speech on the radio station's part. They have the right to support the war, and make that clear by not playing any artists who oppose it. Just like how Apolyton has the right to control the messages posted on this forum. Private interests have the power, not the government.

Lets see if we can't get all those cheese pop artists coming out against the war. I would have no complaints if their music were summarily discontinued on TV and radio.

If you'd get off of your soap box and read a bit more you may find that the government had nothing to do with this case. It is a few radio execs at one company which appear to have made a personal choice.

I still contend, though, that corporations are risk adverse and they hate to be involved in controversy. Controversy always offends someone and that's not good for business.

They are the ones playing up the controversy, doing it probably for publicity.

If it weren't for their actions I would never have heard of this radio station. If it weren't for their actions there would not be a controversial discussion about it on forums like these.
