Star plot data for gaiamap, based on Gaia DR3 data

The following .7z files contain Gaia source data (joined with various other sources accessed through SIMBAD) processed into the format expected by the gaiamap application, broken down by declination in the sky. The full data set is over 120 GB uncompressed; if you want to plot only a portion of the sky you can download the files corresponding to the desired regions.

The data includes the following information fields (not all fields present for all sources):

  • The star/point source's Gaia DR3 designation
  • Up to seven other designations, cross-referenced with a variety of catalogs
  • Primary category and spectral type from SIMBAD
  • Location in the sky (RA/DEC, in degrees)
  • Three magnitude measurements: G/V-band, B-band, and R-band
  • Distance estimate in light years (with corrections from Bailer-Jones 2021)
  • Proper motion along RA and DEC directions (arcseconds/1000 years)
  • Angular size of the source in RA and DEC directions (arcminutes, for galaxies, nebulae, etc.)
  • Radial velocity (km/s)

To use these files with the gaiamap application, download the desired declination range and decompress the files into the degrees/ folder in your gaiamap repo.

The files in each archive are in a pipe-delimited ('|') text format, so desired data can be extracted and used with other applications as well; each file represents the Gaia point sources in one square degree of the sky and has a numeric name aaabbb, where aaa is the right ascension in degrees and bbb is the declination in degrees (south negative) plus 90.
