Nvidia or ATI?
Last month ATI Technologies announced their high-end Radeon 9800 XT graphics card for next generation gaming systems.
Just two days ago Nvidia released their new high-end GeForceFX 5700 Ultra and GeForceFX 5950 Ultra graphics processing units (GPUs).
Which company's products do you prefer to use?

The courage of many people will falter because of the fearful fate they see coming upon the earth, because the stability of the very heavens will be broken up. Then everyone will see the Son of Man arrive on the clouds with power and great glory. So when all these things begin to happen, stand straight and look up, for your salvation is near!" --Luke 21:25-28

First, all the Christians who have died will rise from their graves. Then, together with them, we who are still alive and remain on the earth will be caught up in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air and remain with him forever. --1 Thessalonians 4:16-17

I bought an ATI 9800pro 2 weeks ago, very satisfied with both the performance and stability. Before that I had a Geforce 2 MX.
Right now ATI has the performance edge in new games due to its cards having much better DX9 capability. MS is realeasing DX9.1 soon, so this advantage may be short-lived.
I have no preference towards either company; whatever performs the best I will consider buying.

I was going to buy a ATI 8500 or something like that. But I heard about problems with that and Neverwinter Nights, so I just went with nvidia. It's a decent card I suppose. I bought one of the lower end ones.

Don't get a Radeon 9200 or GeForce FX 5200.
Everything else is good on both sides.

although ati has the performance crown--and i'd go with performance any day--if nvidia comes up with a better card soon, i'll switch back to them.
right now i have a nvidia geforce3... haven't upgraded. were i to upgrade today, i'd go ati, even though i hate their drivers with a passion.
nvidia's drivers are beautiful, gorgeous, and don't kill the operating system.

The new GeForce FX 5700 is actually faster on average than the Radeon 9600 (ever so slightly), and they're in the same price range. The new 52.xx drivers offer a substantial performance increase with no loss of quality (real-time shader precompilation or somesuch).
The GeForce FX 5950 (also brand new) is on par with the 9800 XT most of the time.

why did the change the driver name to "forceware"?
seriously, "catalyst" is good, sounds like you're making the graphics speed up... "detonator" is good, sounds like you're making the power explosively good... but "forcewware" sounds like a bunch of star wars dorkdom.

"Forceware" to me has negative conotations. "Spyware"..."Malware"..."Adware"...
"Forceware", to me, sounds like software you don't want but are forced to have for other things to function. Brilliant name, Nvidia (pardon me, "NVIDIA").

NVidia... I had an ATI Rage card and it sucked... they lost my business. I've had a GeForce 2 GTS and a GeForce 4 TI4200 and was and still am extremely happy with both. I usually skip a generation before I upgrade my video card. I don't know much about the FX series, I'll wait and see what's next. Until then, my GF4 gives me great performance, even with newer games. Half-Life 2 will be the next litmus test for my card.

Obviously you haven't heard about Nvidia's cards being half the speed as equivalent ATI cards in HL2 then.

Geforce FX5900, although I am very concerned about this HL2 issue...what is the deal there? Sounds very suspect...

That is very mercenary...although true. Last time I bought an AMD, this time and the time before last I bought an Intel...depends on who has the best processor at my price range...
Now the whole ATI vs NVIDIA thing is a lot more subjective though...there seems to be arguments either way, and it depends on the game. Although perhaps someone would like to explain what is going on with the HL2 issue. I mean, which one is the best often changes back and forth depending on the engine involves, but to be half the power - well that is just plain suspect, and dare I say it, even suggests rigging...

may the best technology win: it's always pure power, followed by drivers.
if ATi and nVidia had equally powerful cards, i'd probably go nVidia simply because their drivers are so much better.
since ATi has the better card now, i'd probably go for them.

I've got the same card, installed it, upgraded my drivers, never had a problem since.
Maybe you should do a clean install.

Tests with the GeForce FX cards are irrelevant to me. Plus, a lot of those "tests" are BS and don't really reflect what most PC's do. They build bare-bones PC's just built for tests, tweak them to the max, them run just one game like a drag race. Then one company gets all excited when they win.
OMFG we 0wNZER j00 we had 161 fps to your 155...
I'm more concerned about value, reliability, and compatability. As I said before, ATI has failed me in all three of those. And my last two cards GF2 and GF4 have been great. That's just my experience, though. Everyone will have a different one. And to each his own.

Well I must admit, I have never had any bother with GeForces, but I have no experience of ATI so I couldn't say how they behave...

In HL2 it was more like the 9800 Pro got 60fps and the GeForce FX 5900 got 30fps...and since this is average framerate, that's a problem.
Supposedly the new 52.xx drivers significantly boost performance, but I've yet to see benchmarks of them in HL2.

ATI:
Antialiasing better than nVidia's
Great performance (still priced equal with nVidia)
Look to have the better DX9 architecture (nVidia needs highly optimized code paths, even Carmack pointed that out)
Questionable driver stability (though I dont believe they are **** anymore, they are back in business now for long enough)
nVidia:
long experience in 3D market
wide industry support
Anisotropic Filtering better than that of ATI
CineFX (DX9) Architecture seems to be inferior to ATI's
Cheating for better results in benchmarks
spooky benchmark results (R9600Pro better than FX5900 Ultra sure makes me wonder!!)

ATI has done it's fair share of cheating too, mainly to get more FPS than GeForce in Quake3. Remember those "Quack3" benchmarks?

ATI and NVidia benchmark almost exactly the same, so why not go with the card that makes less noise and doesn't take up a PCI slot?
ATI all the way.

I've always considered ATI's better -- it looks the same and takes a far smaller performance hit.
