There is no advantage to using Open Source software in the military if you must release any modifications you make to it to anyone else, like China.
Why not?

Why would the US army obey the Public License?

Because you can do the same thing with commercial software -- ergo there is no advantage of open source.

Because otherwise it would set precedent as saying the GPL is invalid. Which would be great, actually.

Is the government in the habit of modifying the Windows operating system and then releasing it back to MS?

Not like MS hasn't been using GPL code inside their programs without releasing the resulting code.

What wrong way? Maybe you would have prefered a PM to a mod, but when asked the mod would have said he got a PM and all the Macheads would have suspected Asher (even if it wasn't him). Granted, if I came upon the forum, I would have just PMed Ming, but then Asher would take the heat anyway. The Macheads hate him for breaking up their parties with cold, hard facts .

hi ,

facts that only seems to be facts to a small group of people , ....

have a nice day

I don't think you understand.

I never implied anything of the sort -- but one of the perceived advantages of Open Source is how you can get to the code and modify it to your will. Since this isn't an option for places like the Army, it nullifies that advantage.

Prove it or can it.

Not like Linux hasn't been using proprietary code inside their OS without paying the licensing fee.

Sorry to bring up this debate again , but Hitler brought about the recovery of the German economy and created jobs . Would you endorse that , just because it was the right thing , irrespective of the way he did it ? Glonkie didn't have to gloat (negatively) afterwords , and here I'm not referring to the metohds , I'm referring to his style of replying to other posters , and casting aspersions as to their mental integrity .

Back OT :

Let the courts decide whether Linux is using proprietary code . Though I do agree , using Open Source is rather useless if you have to release the code to all and sundry (in a military environment , that is) .
