Plan My Life: Where Should I Go?
Some time in early January I'm going to Madagascar to do some sort of conservation project for 10 weeks. I don't know anything about it, please don't ask me. After which, I plan to take a few months and travel the world, starting probably with Australia and New Zealand, and moving on to the Americas and Europe.
I don't really want to do South America (at this point in time), but I need some good ideas of places, or areas with good concentrations of places I can visit in North America and Europe. Places I should see while I'm young and free and so forth.
Ideas?
Oh, and if anyone wants to offer me the use of a bed for a night or two, do feel free

If I did, I'd have some difficulty getting back into the US...

I have two roughed-out ideas. The first is a continent wide polymeet, Texas, Chicago, New York tour, but I don't know if it's really the best way to see it.
The other other is to fly into Vancouver, and see a little of the mountains etc. there, then fly to Chicago, and then to Montreal or NYC from there.
Much as I'd love to find a reason to come to Texas, is there really anything there worth seeing?
Asia I have neither the time nor the money to do properly, and they speak forrin.

Oh hell. Visas.
Do I need a Visa for travelling into and through any of these countries for about a month?
USA, Canada, Oz, NZ, Fiji, Mexico.
And where's Mobius.

I'd let you stay at my place in California but I will most likely be in Iraq or some other godless **** hole by then.

Ramo pretty much summed it up, but I would also add that Austin is within very reasonable driving distance of San Antonio and Dallas, two places you would also want to see.

California is a must see destination. Fine wines, excellent food & cheeses, Holliwood, San Fransisco & the Golden Gate Bridge, ride a 19th century trolley car, lay on the beach in San Diego, try out some of the best night clubbing in the world, then finely meet some of the hottest women on Earth.

My sister went to Russia once, actually on a mission trip with her church. She said that on the train ride to, hmm, Penza I think it was, she was hit on and offered vodka by two very drunk uniformed Russian soldiers. They tried to invite her into their cabin (or whatever you call it on a train). Needless to say, she declined...
OTOH, she DID enjoy the trip, but mainly the sightseeing in Moscow and St. Petersburg rather than the missionary stuff.

St. Petersburg or Moscow might be worth a brief trip but much of the rest of Russia is a "why bother" affair. Lake Bikail might be worth it if you are already in the area but certainly not worth a seporate trip all by itself.

Probably not the time to mention those outbreaks of antibiotic resistant bubonic plague in Madagascar. Probably.

Other than that, what a great place to visit and work. I'm very envious.
Definitely visit Vancouver- you have mountains, sea/beaches and skiing all within a half hour/hour's drive, with some of the best food in North America (Viet Namese, Cantonese, Cambodian) and it's clean. Like Seattle but run by the Singaporeans.
Do come to Australia- I'm sure by then all the rugby louts will have been deported.

The plan so far is fly from Madagascar to Adelaide, then get the train to Darwin, stopping off for a week in Alice. The fly to Cairns and see the reef for a bit, before flying on to NZ. Get the train down the spine, and fly off to... and then I think Austin then, Vancouver, Chicago, Montreal or NYC?
Then to Europe: Milan, Prague, Helsinki, London.
