I've kept 1.
"Thou shalt not make thee any graven image...thou shalt not bow down thyself unto them, nor serve them."
2, same.
"Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain"
Rarely...but yes, I have broken 3.
"Keep the sabbath day to sanctify it"
No. I used to work Sundays for about 2 months during the summer last year.
"Honour thy father and thy mother"
Not always.. no.
"Thou shalt not kill"
This has to do with persons. I've kept this one.
"Neither shalt thou commit adultery"
Kept.
"Neither shalt thou steal"
No, I've stolen before.
"Neither shalt thou bear false witness against thy neighbour"
Kept.
"Neither shalt thou desire thy neighbour's wife, neither shalt thou covet thy neighbour's house, his field, or his manservant, or his maidservant, his ox, or his ass, or any thing that is thy neighbour's"
No, I'd be lying if I said that I've never felt jealous for someone else.

In all seriousness Christianity's core teachings are the most humane in history and a clear compass for peace in the world IMO.
Like love your neighboor like yourself. Or do not kill, don't lie etc. In its core, Christianity is the most humane religious belief, nevermind what poeple or nations have made of it.

So then you've studied all other religions well enough to conclude that Christianity is the most humane?
And this despite all the violent stuff in the Bible like slavery and piles of enemies' foreskins? Or was that just conveniantly glossed over while you were examining all world religions for humanity?
Even this list of commandments has obvious holes. Murder is out. Thats good. Unfortunately it looks like maiming people is OK. Or at least not so bad that it was worth mentioning.
How can you take a list seriously that feels things like:
* Don't swear
* Don't work on Sundays
* Don't covet your neighbors ox and ass
are higher priority than things like:
* Don't rape (unless you're married apparently)
* Don't assault people
* Don't enslave people
* Don't molest children
None of which were worth mentioning?
This list is not very useful and does not survive serious examination. If we lived solely by it we'd have serious problems. Only our secular ideas of right and wrong give a functioning guide.
edit - What I mean is, you have to bring in secular ideas of right and wrong to correct the list of commandments, by deleting the nonsensical (like don't covet that darn ox) and adding the ommisions (like don't rape). Therefore, most of the guidelines are really coming from secular sources ... so what good is the original list?
Not much.

I've broken some of those.. I haven't killed??? Oh man I'm a huge sinner. But it's been while since I broke these....I haven't worshipped other Gods either.... but pretty much everything else, I've broken. Hey, does it count if there was divorce process going on, and they were not together anymore, but only on paper, and you did it only once and still felt bad about it?
Crap, I need to do something about my past sins.

Well I hope I'll be forgiven. I'll try to better my ways... but it's going to be tough on the sabbath and jealousy part. And swearing part.

When I face God, I wonder if God is humor kind of God..
'Pekka... YOU HAVE WASTED your life!'
'uhmm.. I guess so'
'OK. I forgive. What about the sins you did? I had hard time to make space for your file!'
'I didn't get the memo...'
Should I trust this strategy? Or should I fall on my knees and cry and beg for forgiveness?

Yeah, I was unclear on that. I haven't cheated on my wife. But I've had premarital sex, I 've cheated on a girlfriend, and I've slept with a married woman (besides my wife, obviously). I figured one of those probably counted.
So what does constitute adultery?

I didn't vote for #2, because I never understood what that means. I did vote for #1, although I kind of sort worship the earth and sun. But I don't consider them gods. I just really enjoy nature.

Not to be rude, but thats a pretty weak response to my post. I guess its sufficient for hand waiving away problems and glossing over issues.
You'd have to define "core meaning" which would probably be pretty hard. Then you'd have to compare it to the "core meaning" of all the other religions.

Yawn. If you're not interested in the topic, fine. But insults aren't a substitute for actual points.
On the other hand if you wanted to avoid the points, you might be reduced to insults.

I'll ask again.
What does #2 mean?
And #9- the lust thing I always thought christians considered everyone your neighbor. So when you lust after Michael Douglas' wife you are breaking #9.

"dude you suck"?
"your stupid games"?
I'm sorry. If thats what you consider a reply, you are simply not at my level on the issues or in maturity.
And thats it for me on this one. Which is fine since the threads more about who killed who and all.
Good luck with the love thing, I think it needs some work.

Commandment 1: Love your God with all your heart, will all your soul, with all your mind.
Commandment 2: Love thy neighbour as thyself.
I think #2 covers slavery, molestation and assault. Not swearing by God, and keeping Sunday holy are in there because they are religious rules, not judicial rules. Envy is in there because everyone overlooks it.

Well maybe Wombat. If you interpret it that way, it does sound a lot better, and those are good points.
Not to be argumentative, but I think thats a generous interpretation. It bothers to be specific about odd things, like Sundays and oxen, but it leaves big issues like rape, enslavement, moletstation, etc. to be inferred. Even if you think those things are really inferred (even though other parts of the Bible are ok with slavery at least), its odd priorities.
And its ashame that loving god is number one on his agenda. I guess hes more of an organic government than a mechanistic one.
Does the actual word "Love" appears in any of them?
I'm sorry to go on about it. I guess its an important topic to me because here in the US so many people want to post them in public places, like schools.

Yep. That's why we also need some of the context to understand how the Ten Commandments apply to our lives.
As for number 2: What is an idol? An idol can simply be anything that we trust in more than God. You can make an idol out of anything. Canada worships an idol of paper, the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
nato:
IW is just quoting Jesus' counter-argument to the question of which is the most important commandment, of which the second is to love your neighbour as yourself.
If Jesus considers this the best interpretation of the Law and the Prophets of the OT, I'm inclined to go along with him.

And its a shame that loving god is number one on his agenda. I guess hes more of an organic government than a mechanistic one.
|
Why is it a shame? He clearly loves us and asks us to love him. If we do this, many other things will fall into place.
