Reagan
I used to think he was a pretty good president. But I really was too young, and I didn't remember some of the things that happenned.
He talked tough against the russians. but when you think about it, he was all talk and no action.
Sure it invaded grenada. But that wasn't much. A couple minutes of action. And lobbed a few bombs on Libya.
What upsets me is Beirut. Terrorists and people in the middle east found out it only took one bomb to drive the americans away. They still think this today. This is why they are trying to drive us out of Iraq. They are certain a few bombs will drive us away.
Reagan shouldn't have left Beirut go unpunished.
And what about Iran? He did nothing after that did he?
Yes I know the russians were the greater threat at the time, and he had no way of knowing what threat terrorism would pose to the U.S. in the future. But any attack on the U.S. should have been dealt with harshly- no matter who perpetrated it.
As for his domestic policy, well- I'm not overly impressed.
face it, Reagan was average at best.

I give him a 10. The only presidents of the 20th C who could hold a candle to him were FDR and TR (both 10's as well).

Obviously Regan is well liked here.
50/50 split between "4, 3, and 1" and "10 and Banana."

Reagan's policies drove my family to near poverty. My fammily has always done well under dems and goes down the drain when the repugs are in power. Supply-side econommics is just sucking up to Big Business in disguise. His religious fundimentalism and the crap he pulled supporting tinpot dictators, like Saddam. Reagan is the 2nd worst president of the century, just behind Hoover.

Savings & Loan Scandal. A devestating blow to our economy. Also a brilliant way for the republicans to transfer money from the poor and middle class to the rich. A classic!
That alone buries Reagan for me. If thats not enough we have:
The standard enormous republican deficits.
Selling arms to terrorists.
Iran-Contra, an attempt to set up a shadow government and bypass that pesky Constitution.
The mess in Nicaragua.
Letting our soldiers get hit badly in Lebanon and generally making a fiasco of it.
Ready to sign away all our nuclear weapons at Iceland without even consulting the military guys.
But he did consult astrologers?! Is this some kind of joke?
This man was an awful president. Fuzzy blind hero worship makes people think of him fondly rather than remember the major scandals.
I gave him a 2. 1 is reserved for someone who starts a nuclear war or something.
Just my opinion, I know other people feel differently. I just don't think the record backs them up as well.

Reagan was an idiot, literally, I think his IQ was only 80-something.

His IQ was 85, but he knew he was dumb, and used his advisors alot. He stood up to the Soviet Union, but didn't play nuclear brinksmanship like Kennedy.
He had Grenada and Libya.... questionable actions, but no large violence.
War on Drugs.... BOOO!
But after seeing Clinton and Bush H and W..... he wasn't so bad.

Didn't Condi Rice just say something about how we're still dealing with mistakes from "previous" administrations?
Like, ummm, running away after the Beirut bombing? Naahh, I'm sure she meant Mogadishu.

he wasn't too bad, from what i remember as a little kid, and reading about him, he wasn't in the worse half of leadership.
however, the current conservative drive to name everything after him and call him the best president ever for winning the cold war is silly, because imho, he was just lucky and in the right place for the inevitable defeat of the ussr's system.

Reagan rejected or cut 22 spending programs his first 2 years in office..... Dubya hasn't seen a spending bill he didn't like.... but what do you expect from the child of an oil family who never even knew the phrase "that costs too much"?
Dubya, is, by far, the worst ever, perhaps except LBJ.

democracy and the american people won the cold war. without us, they wouldn't have lost, so it's silly to say reagan won it.
it was our drive in the economy, it was our technological wizardry, it was our american patriotism that proved to the soviets that they just couldn't keep up. bears can't fly.

Yup. Though I'd have to say Herbert Hoover is right down there. Reagan nearly bankrupted the country. His deregulation schemes are still haunting us today. S&L alone will cost us about one trillion dollars when all is said and done. Then there's Iran-Contra and the subversion of the Constitution. Finally there's the war on all things fun: drugs, porography, sex, etc.
