Who is on your money?
Ok, another money thread.
Looking through my cash I saw something interesting. A few Italian Lire bills here, and I was interested in who the Italians choose to put on the bills. Montessori, Marconi, and Bellini on the ones I have. An educator, an inventor, and an artist (right?). In the US we just have Presidents and other famous political leaders. Quite a different approach I see in Italy.
Who or what does everyone else's money choose to honor? For the Europeans, lemme know both what y'all have on your Euro coins, but also from your currency before the switch.
Here is a run down of American money:
1 cent
front: Abraham Lincoln
back: the Lincoln memorial in DC
5 cent
front: Thomas Jefferson
back: Monticello (the home Jefferson built and lived in)
10 cent
front: Franklin Roosevelt
back: a torch and some plants, i don't know what this means
25 cent
front: George Washington
back: an eagle, though now special designs for every state
50 cent (not used much)
front: John F. Kennedy
back: US seal
1 dollar coin (not used much)
front: Sacajawia & child (Indian guide that went with Louis & Clark on their expedition to explore the Louisiana Purchase)
1 dollar bill
front: George Washington
back: US seal and a creepy pyramid with an eye
2 dollar bill (not used much)
front: Thomas Jefferson
back: signing of the Declaration of Independence
5 dollar bill
front: Abraham Lincoln
back: Lincoln memorial
10 dollar bill
front: Alexander Hamilton (1st US treasurer, famous Federalist and founding father, but not President)
back: US Treasury building
20 dollar bill
front: Andrew Jackson (populist President from 1820s, also General from War of 1812)
back: White House
50 dollar bill
front: U.S. Grant (General of Union army during Civil War, and President)
back: US Capitol building
100 dollar bill
front: Benjamin Franklin
back: Independence Hall (where Declaration of Independence was signed in Philadelphia)
500 dollar bill (no longer in print)
front: William McKinley (25th U.S. President, during Spanish-American War, was assassinated)
back: Numeral 500 and the ornamental phrase "Five Hundred Dollars"
1000 dollar bill (no longer in print)
front: Grover Cleveland (22rd & 24th U.S. President, very forgetable President)
back: Numeral 1000 and the ornamental phrase "One Thousand Dollars"
5000 dollar bill (no longer in print)
front: James Madison (4th U.S. President, author of US Constitution, Founding Father)
back: Numeral 5000 and the ornamental phrase "Five Thousand Dollars"
10,000 dollar bill (no longer in print)
front: Salmon Chase (U.S. Treasury Secretary under Lincoln)
back: Numeral 10,000 and the ornamental phrase "Ten Thousand Dollars"
100,000 dollar bill (This note never appeared in general circulation, and was only used in transactions between Federal Reserve Banks. )
front: Woodrow Wilson (28th U.S. President, during WW1)
back: Numeral 100,000 and the ornamental phrase "One Hundred Thousand Dollars".

10 agorot:
front: the denomination '10'
back: a replica of an ancient coin, with the seven-branched candelabrum.
1/2 a shekel:
front: the denomination '1/2 New Shekel'.
back: a Lyre, and the emblem of the state of Israel.
1 shekel:
front: the denomination '1 New Shekel'.
back: a Lily, and the emblem of the state of Israel.
( a special issue with the picture of Maimonides exists )
5 Shekels:
a twelve-edged coin.
front: the denomination '5 New Shekels'
back: a typical capital of a coloumn of the Israelite period 7-10 Century BC.
( a special issue with the picture of Levi Eshkol exists )
10 Shekels:
front: the denomination
Back: Palm tree with seven leaves and two baskets with dates; the emblem of the State of Israel; the words "for the redemption of Zion" in ancient and modern Hebrew; vertical lines.

Azazel, I've got a Shekel that doesn't fit the above list. Its got a numerial 1 on the front, and the back has what looks like wheat. Arabic writing on the side and Hebrew on the bottom. Its of a light material, like tin or something. Its edge is all bumpy.

Good to know the Brits have some creativity. Problem is your colonies have the same problem. My Canadian coins and Bermuda coin all have the Queen on them too.

Although The Queen is on the front of all UK currency, the reverse side is a bit more interesting. But they keep changing the cast:
£5 note: Currently, Elizabeth Fry, an early 19th century prison reformer. Formerly, George Stephenson, engineer/inventor(locomotives and railways).
£10 note: Currently, Charles Darwin. Formerly, Charles Dickens with a scene from the cricket match at Dingley Dell which is based on an illustration from the first edition of the "Pickwick Papers".
£20 note: Currently, Sir Edward Elgar, Edwardian composer. Formerly, Michael Faraday, Physicist.
£50 note: Sir John Houblon, the first Governor of the Bank of England.
I'm pretty sure Shakespeare was on the back of a note at some point but can't remember which one.
Notice the similarity to the case of the US $10,000 bill. These bankers must be a bit egotistical.
Also, it seems we have you Yanks to blame for the very existence of most of these denominations:
Quote:
|
During the 18th century there was a gradual move toward fixed denomination notes which by 1745 were being part printed in denominations ranging from £20 to £1,000. In the latter half of the century gold shortages caused by war and revolution led to the production of £10, £5, £2 and £1 notes

Shakespeare was on the first "famous personages" range- he was on the £20.
Others in the same range were Sir Isaac Newton (£1), The Duke of Wellington (£5), Florence Nightingale (£10) and Sir Christopher Wren (£50).

Peter, with such a huge amount of famous Brits through the ages I'm surprized how many obscure (at least to this American) folks you've got on bills. I only recognized Dickens and Darwin.

Those are the Italian versions of the Euro-Coins (because every nation have different things on their coins)
While on the over side they all look the same:
As for the old Italian Lira... very often the same coin could have different images and sametimes even different sizes... (the only thing that didn't change was the number written in it) So it is difficult to find a picture with ALL of them in it.

EDIt: And by the way.. the building you can see in the 2 cent coin is the Mole Antonelliana of Torino

Ozzy,
I'm sure not a lot of people around here know who Elizabeth Fry was (I didn't). But that's PC for you: you've got to have a token woman in there someplace.

Norwegian coins
Norwegian notes
On the coins we have: some strange animal (on the 50-øre, wtf is that?), a bird, the king's monogram, order of St. Olav, the king's face, a church and a viking ship.
the notes:
50 kroner: Peter Christen Asbjørnsen. Together with a guy called Moe, he gathered all the folk tales in one book.
100 kr: Kirsten Flagstad, an opera singer
200 kr: Kristian Birkeland, a scientist and inventor of artificial fertiliser IIRC
500 kr: Sigrid Undset, an author (she won the Nobel prize!)
1000 kr: Edvard Munch, greatest painter ever

An educator, an inventor, and an artist (right?). In the US we just have Presidents and other famous political leaders.

Franklin was still a famous political leader, and that is why he made it on our money. If they were looking for inventors/scientists then Edison would be on there instead.
