Sad day for me
I find myself pathetically misty eyed today. As most of you know, I was in the US Navy for 5 years. I went to my former ship's Website and discovered that it was to be decommissioned on the 12th of December.
Suprisingly enough, I almost cried. I never fully realized how much that ship affected my life, even almost 10 years later.
I really wish I had found out sooner, and I would have scraped the money together to be there for the decommissioning ceremony. Witch is being addressed by the first Captain I ever had.
no ack here.

It is amazing how inanimate objects and places effect us when they change. Sorry you feel bad.

Yeah, it was my home for 3.5 years. Also it was my transportation around the world.

As a matter of fact, I am one of the sailors on the fantail, that's the back of the ship. There just isn't a way to point out which one, but I am, in fact, in that picture.

Another thing the Navy did for me was let me see the hometown or country of quite a few Apolyton posters.
Chicago, San Diego, Tijuana, Hawaii, Australia-Perth/Freemantle and Sydney, mainland China.
Thanks Skanky.

At least she's going into the 'ready reserve', so it isn't 'the end'.

That's funny- well not really
I felt sad when I learned my ship was sunk and is on the bottome of the Atlantic ocean
http://ussguamlph9.org/destination.html
okay it was kind of a piece of ****, and probably deserved to be on the bottom of the ocean. Yet I kind of grew attached to this rustbucket.
We were also known for an accident in Barcelona involving a liberty boat taking people from and to the ship. 49 people were killed.

The final fate of my ship:

I sympathize. As my above post shows. I was sad when I learned from a website what happenned to my ship.
I already knew it was decommissioned- as I was the one who decommissioned it along with the rest of the crew.

The other ship I was on before the Guam was the USS Enterprise. I was there during the refueling and complex overhaul. That was quite an experience. Decomissioning the ship would be too much work, so they decided to keep the ship going for another 15 to 20 years even with an obsolete engineering plant design.
though I do commend the nuclear physics guys on designing a better core. The original core in 1962 only lasted like 5 years. So even though these cores are the same size, the boron and uranium is distributed more efficiently and these core may get 20 years out of them- we have 8 reactors.
This ship was a pain in the ass when it came to getting reliable hot water. Cold showers suck!!!!!
oh, that isn't one of our better pictures . That was a Vietnam war era picture. Not as bad as the USS Forrestal fire, but still pretty bad.
A better picture of my first ship. This is a 60's- actually it is probably 70's (as it has Tomcats on deack)- era picture. the Island (superstructure) is much bigger now. It has underwent extensive modifications.
newer picture
