Round 2 settings:
Deity level, 1x1x, small map, archipelagos, 3 billion years, roving bands.
You are each playing someone with the same Round 1 outcome. If there are scheduling difficulties, please let me know, and I will try and work something out.
Please take the time at game start to assure that the game is fair and the host has no advantage in tech.

No odds? Here's my prediction (%=chance of winning)
War4 60%
Markus 50%
Mark Everson 50% (this is gonna be close!)
Horse 40%
Crustacian 45% (Kenthur does have some experience under his belt)
Smartfart 60% (no offence Empress)
Deity (X) (I'm gonna leave this a secret!)

Cap - LOL! I know you are just joking, but this is a good opportunity to explain how the pairings work.
No, it really is coincidence, mostly. Swiss pairing is partly arranged and partly random. A few players indicated that they could not host, and I also try and alternate hosting (like alternating who gets white in chess). And opponents must be matched with those of the same (or closest) scores.
After those are taken into account, the pairings are random within the groupings. There are 3 games where the Round 2 host also hosted in Round 1, but that is because there a 3 players who cannot host. It is pretty unlikely that someone who hosted both duels will host the 3rd round MP game. It's not impossible, but there is a built-in bias against it.
Yes, Mark E vs Aritea will be an interesting match, but there are others (that did not occur) that would have been fascinating as well (Aritea vs Markus for example).
I hope they all turn out to be great duels. Then, it will be on to the MP games!

I have to admit that I am most intruigued by the Carnide/Markus duel. Some games are perfection, some games are fast armies, but I have a sense of "lethalness" when it comes to those two!

"5 kreplas on the man with the red belt, and 50 dupasz on the tall one".
"No." said the second, "25 kreplas on the *opponent* of the red belt, and 40 dupasz on the lady at 1-5 odds"!

ahhhhhhh noooooooooooooooo not carnide *lol*
Good thing as host i get to pick the settings. The problem when playing carnide is you have to play ICS Its impossible to attack him once the game gets rolling, and i can think of very few people who want to attack 60 -70 cities. This is going to be one hell of a bribe war if we start off close to each other. Can't say i am to trilled about this game I can't wait to play in the MP games.
You get a new icq number carnide?

I just played markus. Was a good game.
He won. He was so far ahead in the power graph!!
I guess I will have to learn a few new tricks.

We even started 2 times, but i had the MDL rules.txt the first time so we played agian.
Carnide didn't build any wonders and i built, lighthouse, HG and Mikes. near the end i had 2 times as many cities and units as him. I am not usually the waring type but its the only way to win against you It was a nice 90 min game.

Empress and myself got our duel finished.
She wasn't short of bad luck.
I build my capital on chokepoint wich separated 2 parts of continent.
That left 95% of terrain to me
With such a start,it wasn't so hard to won that game.
I had terrible misfortune in my duel with Nappy, and great luck in my duel with Empress.
I think 'better in two' could eliminate luck.
But since tournament already started, there's not much we can do now.

SmartFart - I've registered your win.
Concerning the "luck" factor: I agree it could make a better tourney, though it would have to be a longer one (part of the purpose is to expose players to opponents they might not normally play, so there would need to be more rounds of play).
If this works out right, most players will have participated in a game with most of the other players in one round or another.
Your description of the game with Empress raises a problem I had hoped to have solved by now - unequal maps and starting positions. I had not understood how difficult map-making would be, and had assumed I could provide fair ones with little effort. And, indeed, maps are fairly easy to create. I have several which would have prevented Empress's dilemma.
Unfortunately, making them for 2-player games proved a problem, and I am only now overcoming them. I spent too much time trying to assure the starting resources and techs were balanced and undervalued the simple fact of overall map flexibility.
It is my belief that no player should be "doomed from the start" by virtue of the map itself. Just too late for Round 2, I came up with maps that allowed considerable freedom of land *and* sea opportunities AND gave decent starting positions (with well-distributed resources) for both players. It takes a few starts to get the techs balanced, but I think that is worth the effort.
I intend to apply that principle to MP maps for the 3rd and 4th rounds.

Oh boy, im 2-0....and that was actually my favorite duels ever played!! I got to use a nice little strategy i never did had a chance in a 1on1. Although it was sort of odd using crusadars in the 1700's.
anyways, im looking foward for those MP games
