Tales Of The Years: 1834-1842
1834:

With the recommendations of my ministers, I set out to finish off as many of our enemies as possible.

First thing that I can do is to celebrate as many cities as possible.

Adjust workers in Shadowpalace, Atlanta, Intombe, Hlobane, Idefix, Sheol, Tugela, Flood, Paradiso, Melkweg, Dallas, Outpost, Shield, Obelix, Kostunrix, Nognix, Vile, Cannae, Ngome all to celebrate!

Isandhlwana, Zimbabwe, Mpondo, Swazi, Apollonia, still refuse. Rushing Markets and Banks to induce celebrations.

Renamed the insipid cities, Cannae, Genoa and Crete to Dis, Malebolge and Cocytus, respectively.

Briefly consider relocating palace to Obiwan, as per Cityplanner request.

Hold off on Aqueduct, Courthouse, requests, rush engineer in Atlanta, leave Engineer in Imperialis, rush Bank in Inferno. Ore already has temple. Leave Rhodes alone, switch Stuttgart to Alpine Troop and rush Alpine.

All other cityplanner recommendations look good.

81 cities = 162 engineers.

We currently have 60.

Rushing finished due to voluntary spending limits. Lots of Engineers, Calvary and white goods built. We now have 2500 gold.

Hit enter to start the turn.

1836

Americans get Tactics from Germans.

Sort through all the celebrations. Only one got cancelled from Engineer rushing.

Build city of Mission Hill on Wine, it's a famous vineyard in BC, close to where my girlfriend's family lives.

Gold now at 4077, earning nearly 1700 gold per turn now, with all the banks rushed last turn.

Now up to 71 Engineers.

Kill Russian settler south of Outpost. Kill another. Find St. Petersburg, right where ljcvetko suggested it would be!

Bribe St. Petersburg for 488 gold, and a city size 3.

Railroad completed to Mylitene.

Railroad completed to Bombay.

Find LA close to Delhi.

Investigate Mylitene, only 1 Rifleman! Attack with vet Calvary, lose. Attack with non-vet, barely lose. Attack with second non-vet calvary, they finally roll over Mylitene.

German Dragoon caught cheating by Bapedi.

Start clearing out units from Bombay for Operation Anaconda.

Rush a few Stock Exchanges and Banks in high trade cities, switch more cities over to units and unit production or to Barracks to produce much needed Vet Calvaries.

We don't have a very good unit concentration, in terms of where we would like to strike, so we will have to work on that. Once we finish our Railroad spurs, then we can advance the front quite substantially.

I'd like to build a railroad at some point to the river delta, but that will be lots of work, and require many engineers.

Checking a 10/50/40 we could discover techs every 8 turns and still gain 800 gold per turn. Not worth it at this point.

1838:

Americans counterattack, kill 2 engineers and a Fanatic.

Greeks offer CEASEFIRE after gov't collapses! We were not notified of any change!
Immediately revert to Democracy.

Decline Ceasefire for now. I want to keep up the pressure.

Russians offer CEASEFIRE, decline. Make disparaging remarks about Russian personal cleaniness before doing so.

Germans kill scouting cannon with another cannon, and advancing task force. This should be interesting.

Vet Calvary rushed in Delhi attacks LA, crushes non-vet rifleman. He has a third of a move left with a fortified musketeer, (from investigation of the city last turn.)

8/3 * 1.5 = 12 * 0.3 = 4 vs 3 x 1.5 = 4.5

So we have roughly a 40% chance of winning this attack. IF we win, we take LA, if not, we will need to wait a turn.

Attack, just barely lose to the Musketeer. Rifleman from garrison in Delhi spanks Musketeer, and Nearby fanatic takes the city.

Americans insist upon audience, request a CEASEFIRE!

Now we can test ljcvetko's strategy to see if we can't topple the American democracy. We accept the Ceasefire. Bombay already in disorder this turn, so if the American's can't fix their city, their government will collapse.

Numerous units begin occupying American territory. One cannon sneers at a dragoon. C'mon kitties! You know you want to attack my unit.

Vet cannon near Argos smites wandering Greek dragoons. Now to prepare for the last city of the Russians, Moscow! Rush diplomats in outpost and St. Petersburg. We will now have 4 diplomats and 4 calvary available to take Moscow next turn. Wandering diplomat returning to Moscow encounters bribable cannon for 440 gold. Decide to test Fanatic at 1/3 against cannon, Fanatic wins, allowing for 5 diplomats to be available to try to take the walls of Moscow next turn.

Meanwhile, on the German front, we have occupied the mountain while completing the railroad in the former Zulu lands. Next, I will route the railroad north and west from Zimbabwe up to the former American territories in the North. This is the only railroad within our territory left to complete, while the enemy territories remain out of our grasp. What I will do is try to finish the railroad to Hannover first, and then with whatever I have left, work on the railroad North and West.

Once I take Hannover, I'm not sure whether I should wait for more instructions, or to play on since this will likely only take another turn or two, given the size of our forces waiting for the railroad in Zululand.

Rush remaining white goods, banks/markets/aqueducts/sewers, leaving 2.5 K as my custom.
Now earning 1.8 K/turn.

1840:

Germans not pleased to see all the units fortified on the mountains north of Hannover. Too bad I have cannons firing down at the calvary in the valley.

Investigate Moscow, there are 6 improvements, including the city wall, Three riflemen on a river.
Not going to be an easy nut to crack.

Meet with Americans. Demand tribute. Honest Abe blows a gasket, declares war. American government remains in Democracy.

Well, guess we know the answer to the test. Now we need to flatten the Yanks.

DENVER:

Now with all our troops up close and personal... Investigate city. 1 rifleman and 2 muskets.

Vet calvary crushes rifleman
Vet calvary stomps musketeer.
Vet calvary unluckily loses to second musketeer.
Non vet cannon polishes off garrison. Fanatic takes Denver.

NEW ORLEANS:

Railroad built to the city. Sniveling Americans attempt to talk, I decline to meet with them, citing health reasons.

Investigate city. 4 Musketeers.

It's time to roll 'em.

First two Musketeers kill Vet cannons.
Second two pummeled by Cannons. Time to send in the calvary to mop up. 1 vet cannon finishes off the third Musketeer, leaving 1 weak Musket at the mercy of a non-vet calvary. Calvary promoted, Vet calvary captures New Orleans, making sure to kill the invading German calvary resting in the city radii.

I notice two more German cannons to the south. Gotta love the increased mobility of railroads.

That leaves one more city, Bombay.

BOMBAY:

Americans request an audience. I tell them that vacationing in their lovely cities has improved my health substantially. So much, that I'm afraid that I've developed a habit for vacationing in American cities. Oddly, the only one I have not had the privilege of visiting is Bombay. I request that they cede Bombay in exchange for a favourable account in the ultimate travel guide, 'Beautiful cities of the Apolytonian Imperium.' Oddly, Honest Abe refuses to end the war.

Investigate Bombay.

2 riflemen, a musketeer and a weakened calvary. I'm going to have to gather all the units on our fronts if I am to take this city this turn. It won't be a problem, since the railroad now connects most of our cities.

Vet Cannon nearly kills first Rifleman.

2nd Vet Cannon does awful against second Rifleman. Not even half wounded.

Vet Calvary fails to kill second rifleman. C'mon!
Vet Calvary smashes Musketeer. One down.
Vet Cannon roasts Calvary. Two down.
Vet Calvary fails to kill second rifleman.
Rifleman smites rifleman with 1 hp.
Rifleman smites rifleman with 1 hp.

BOMBAY TAKEN!

AMERICAN CIVILISATION DESTROYED!

And then there were Three.

KING RICHARD'S CRUSADE CAPTURED. 28 production, until Industrialisation discovered.

Build railroads. Rushby lots of diplomats, 5 cavalry to bear down on Hannover next turn. Hopefully I will be able to take Moscow.

Leave 2.5K gold as a contingency fund.

1842:

Greeks develop Industrialisation!

Germans exchange Tactics for Industrialisation.

This will be my last turn....

Clear German cannons and Calvary from southern Flank, blocking the path to Hannover.
Railroad constructed to Hannover, now size 14.

So Many improvements, and likely 4 vet Riflemen.

Test to see whether defenses are vet with Vet cannon. Nope.
1st cannon nearly kills first rifleman.
2nd cannon squashes second rifleman.
3rd cannon wounds 3rd rifleman
4th cannon wounds 4th rifleman.

Now here come the calvary.

1st Calvary kills first rifleman.
2nd Calvary punishes next two riflemen.

Weak Vet Calvary takes Hannover!

STATUE OF LIBERTY CAPTURED!
DARWIN'S VOYAGE CAPTURED!

We steal INDUSTRIALISATION!

Treasury now at 5K gold.

Diplomat scouts out the infant German Railroad.

Skier spies wandering cannons near Rammstein. Smashes a twin pack.

Now for MOSCOW.

6th dip sabotages city walls.

I have 5 vet Calvary and 1 non-vet Cannon

1st Calvary damages 1st Rifleman. Must be vets.
2nd Calvary damages 2nd Rifleman.
3rd Calvary kills 3rd Rifleman.
4th Calvary kills 4th Rifleman.
5th Calvary kills 2nd Rifleman.

1/3 of a move. Calvary attacks again and kills the last rifleman.
Cannon walks into city unopposed.

And then there were two.

Almost everything accomplished. Just one more thing left to do. I now have access to one Greek city.

Pharsalos pinpointed.

Diplomat investigates Issus. 1 Musketeer. Capture Issus.

And that's a wrap. I've left 5.3K gold for us to play with, there are very few city improvements required, so most of the cash can go into military upgrades. We have fewer cannons, but about the same number of Calvary as we had 4 turns ago. We now have 79 Engineers.

Haven't looked at the save yet, but it seems that you've done well, Master Jedi

There will be some good debate regarding whether Communism/more techs are worthwhile, since (as I and others have noted) we can win with the units we have now. That fact was demonstrated convincingly in your turns.

Outstanding successes

And the word is ABSORBED - the American civilisation was ABSORBED and CORRECTED to the one path.

This just leaves us with, as STYOM says, the decision to make on what we want to achieve now we are able to win in just a matter of time. Perhaps we can reach Communism and attain that Government before the final victory - creating a Socialist paradise on Earth?

We just gained SoL - which means we can go to Communism immediately, if we want.

Tough call - as I say, we can probably win in Fundy by constantly rushing Cannon/Cavalry/Diplomats. If that's our path, we should turn science off.

If we want more techs, we should attempt that in Communism, and beeline for Espionage.

Also, we may want to consider a brief spate of WLTCD celebrations in Republic, if/when we capture Bach and/or Suffrage. Yes, units out of cities will be an issue. But if we're building all those aqueducts and sewers, we might as well try to take advantage of them.

Depending on our unit count per city, it may not be practicable... but it's a thought. We'd boost some of those size 3 cities to size 8 and increase our final score

edit: we have 385 units and 96 cities.... maybe that's not feasible, after all. At the least, we'd have to rehome a lot of units, which would be an enormous hassle. More importantly, that could be an issue in Communism, too.

(e.g. Bear's Cave supports at least 9 units now, and only produces 5 shields. If we were to move to Communism now, we'd lose 1 unit unless we rearranged some workers beforehand. I'm sure there are other cities like this).

I'm glad to see the RR/road network is beginning to finally pay off. All that time I spent extending them was worthwhile (as of course, it had to be).

It is wonderful to see the American civ eliminated finally (and Bombay specifically). I salute your success in eliminating that blemish on the face of our world!

I figured the Russians wouldn't be too much of a problem, but it is good not to have a civ in our interior (ahem...) while we want to bring all our forces to bear on the borders. Congratulations for eliminating the Russians before they decided to harrass our nearby cities.

High Priest Ben Kenobi - You have done well with the military forces and cities given to you for our advancement. More citizens and cities have been brought into our One True Path, and we will all gain the benefits of this great work in the hereafter!

Re: Tales Of The Years: 1834-1842
Excellent sequence of turns! The end cannot be far away, given the opportunity, I think it quite likely that the Germans and Greeks both would lay down their arms and join the Imperium....unfortunately that cannot happen and we must bring about their re-education in other ways.

While I share our President's desire for more engineers, we do not have a lot of food surplus, and I think it unlikely the we could support anywhere close to 162 engineers. However, I will continue to support the production of additional engineers if it continues to be the will of the people.

First of all, this was my suggestion, though I beleive ljcvetko voted in favour of it. (though as it has yet to work, perhaps you are right in giving him credit )

Having said that, I don't beleive we have given it a fair test. I think demanding tribute effectively gave the Americans an excuse to go to war without having the Democracy fall (I believe the same happens to a Human Democracy, any act of agressive gives the human the opportunity to go to war without penalty...without having the government fall). Seems almost as though it is a moot point however, as we have successfully destroyed the Americans with minimal loss of our units. I would like to see this tried with the Greeks still, particularly if we are going to concentrate on the Germans first.

/me the pleased city planner

If the AI can have a city perpetually in disorder and still remain in a democracy, why would their senate call for an election after a sneak attack?

I agree, we won't need that many engineers. Just a faint hope at the beginning of the turn.

As for credit, you did suggest the strategy in the first place.

Think you could get up a poll tonight? I'd like to play Thursday if possilbe.

Perhaps the idea would work if we offerred the Greeks a ceace-fire while building our RR connections and collecting units in the area. If *they* break a cease-fire *on their own*, perhaps it would trigger the desired government collapse.

We could always break it on our own (when we are ready) on our own (like we care about our reputation).
