Sad news, for those that remember.
For those of you that don't already know this sad news.

Atari closes Hunt Valley Studio
Atari confirms shuttering the studio formerly known as MicroProse. Thirty-five staffers out of work.
Atari corporate today confirmed the closure of its Hunt Valley Studio, which was formerly the independent publisher/developer MicroProse. The studio had recently completed work on Dungeons & Dragons Heroes, but had a long history of development on games that have gone down in the books as best-sellers and award-winners. Those titles include Sid Meier's Civilization, Civilization II, Railroad Tycoon, Colonization, and Pirates.
Nancy Bushkin, Atari vice president of corporate communications, said, "I can confirm that the Hunt Valley Studio, which we manage on behalf of Infogrames Entertainment, was closed. The team there had successfully completed work on their sole project, D&D Heroes, and they had no other titles under way, making this a straightforward business decision. "
She went on to confirm that 35 employees were laid off and that the company is "in discussion with a handful of people regarding other positions."

From gamespot's news pages.
Another reason to bash Atari eh? All those great games, including the one that gave birth to this site. Microprose is no more.

Though MicroProse is just a shadow of its former self.

Microprose WAS just a shadow of its former self. Now the company that brought us Civ1, Civ2, MoM etc... i.e. about half the gaming on this forum, is no more. You'd think Atari would be bright enough to realise that the Microprose name is worth something, but no... they really are that dumb AND cold-hearted.

I'm going to play a memorial game of Civ1 and name my cities after Microprose software titles. Its a fitting tribute to a company that brought me so much pleasure for so many years.

I think I'll do the same -- with Master of Orion 2.

Still many many many CIVII MP games to play.
But this was like watching a sick relative. One that gets weaker and weaker and finally passes on.

Guys, just the name retired, the people will move on and still give us the games that we want. Most of the good ones have moved on anyhow. Microprose was a publisher and a game house, and we know that this industry is not very stable as far as that is concerned.

[Draws breath.....]
Ah damn I just can't be bothered - if all these guys with super degrees and market experience cant work out how to make a profit im not going to help them.
Its obvious that the name 'MicroProse' has been seen as worthless cause it wont mean much to all the new kids and their consoles..........hold on a minute, what about all the peole that have been buying games until now?(and might own a console as well)
Of course a name without content is about as useful as a surfer without waves.............i'm begining to wonder if all this name changing(Atari/Infogrames etc) is not the problem, but maybe the people left behind it once it has changed?
ok so i bothered a bit
I'll remember MicroProse as the people that gave me some of my best gameing experiences
