Oedo years was a big one... But I think my astonishment was greater when you pulled the first OCC off. And I remember when Paul shaved off years of the landing date... He was almost flamed and marked as a cheater, but replied patiently to all questions...
Yes, the spring of 1999 and the rise of OCC... That killed my jogging season... And the shoes haven't left the shelf since.... Damn!

I was in shock too when I won the first OCC game. Rah and I traded records back and forth shaving a few years off each time... and then came Paul. His early records were mind blowing... and then people eventually won with a size one OCC... unbelievable.

It's not really the same. One city in Civ2 is way more powerful than 1 in Civ3. Also, there is no celebrating. If OCC succeeds at Deity you need a killer map, and luck with resources. Even then the time wont be good. In Civ2 OCC records are impressive even by normal standards. Lastly 'shoestring' OCC is just a pipe-dream with Civ3.

I doubt occ would work in CivIII. But I'm too lazy to go through all the posts in the CIV III forum.

It is feasible..........but if OCC didn't already exist it probably wouldn't be invented for Civ3.

With no ability to get non-units and the nature of trading with the AI in CivIII, I doubt it is possible. (but then I originally thought it wasn't in CIVII also. )

I was surprised to pull a win using the tricks from a size 1 OCC.
All you need is a mountain with Gold,
Unfortunately, the strat does not work with MGE, due to the nature of the AI. Even regular OCC is quite a bit harsher without accomodating AI.
I just lost an OCC game by one turn on a Large map on MGE.
ON another, I had a repeating hides demander on another continent, that was only three turns away by trireme. 150 gold and beakers for every caravan. Unfortunately, I deleted the game.

Well I think it is possible, because I have done it. It is however much harder than in Civ2, and you require more luck.

Doesn't building the space ship take too long without having caravans to rush it?
What settings were you playing?
Congrats.

I'm not sure if you played Civ3, but with a decent tech path you can keep up with the AI because there are several relevant techs, all of which unlock some parts of the spaceship. You also have to prebuild the bigger parts using a convenient high shield wonder.
To be honest if you make it that far and have the right resources nearby the spaceship isn't that bad. But it's not really that fun IMO.........Civ3 OCC is just a little too much out of the player's hands for my tastes.
I played Emperor, but there was a guy that claimed he had done it on Deity. It is possible to be sure, if you are patient enough.

That's what I remember... that unlike civ 2, civ 3 required luck on the resources... That even if you were doing great, you were screwed if the resources to build the ship weren't available. Yep... doesn't sound like fun to me either if you waste tons of time only to find out you don't have a chance.

You tried Civ3 OCC? It is tough isn't it. Of course the resources are a good SP addition for normal games, because if you don't have/cannot 'attain' resources it's your own fault. For OCC........bah.

But what hapenned to UBB threads?
Many threads in UBB format still exist. But there are no lists of threads for individual forums now (so you must know the link in advance, you can't browse them). Now under 'Forum Jump' there is only Civ2-Multiplaying under the 'archive' section, no other Civ2 forums.
But they existed for some period even after the switch to vBB. Were they deleted or they are hidden only?

If I remember correctly, there were
a) common UBB forums and
b) archived UBB forums.
Common forums were copied into vBB and they exist in both versions.
Archived UBB versions may be lost... (??) Anyway they existed for some period after the UBB-vBB switch, but now for example the famous The Civ2 Battle Equation Solution thread is lost (Eggman, Buenos, and Euclid discovered the battle algorithm there).

Ah memories...
I still remember the thread that turned me from an unregistered lurker into an Apolyton poster. How long can you wander around with your first Settler before you get Barbs from goody huts. Memories...
