I never really played MOO 2 above easy level before. I loaded MOO 2 up a few days ago and Average seems to be a lot easier than it used to be.
How did I get better without playing it?

Not really, I use the same race point choices, Creative being one, so of course no tech choices.
Ship design, somewhat yes.
Now that I think of it, however, the biggest difference is probably the fact I am playing version 1.2 instead of 1.31.
Maybe that accounts for it.
On the other hand, I am more aggresive than I used to be. That, I think, comes from playing Civ 3. If you aren't aggresive there, you have no chance.

Yes 1.2 will make using vrative a lot easier than 1.31, two extra picks.
Being aggressive is often hard for a creative race, well at least on impossible. But in the main, it is usually better to be aggressive in Moo2 and CivIII. In both extra land means more of everything.
