I live in a rural town with 12000 inhabitants. Close enough to a good job and cheap enough real estate to live lika king.

I currently live in Oslo (pop 500 000). I think that's an OK size for a city. I wouldn't mind living in a larger city as long as the climate is liveable and there's easy access to the nature.
I've also lived in a small town in Queensland, Aus. I loved that as well.
I think as long as you like the people around you the size of the town doesn't matter much.
