"Error loading font:(Error code 28)!!"
I've tried everything to get past it. I go to open the game and -immediately- I get this error. I've tried downloading the fonts, and replacing them. Tried deleting them. Exchanging them. Unstinalling, add/removing all related files, and reinstalling-- Several times. I've even threatened my computer with sledge hammers and sticks of dynomite to no avail-- Anyone who can, please help.

Something to do with too many fonts in your windows folder. the solution should be somewhere in the topped bug thread on this page.

If you've done a clean install of Civ3,PTW, and then Conquest without trying to run anything other than Conquest try running PTW first; I was getting this error after doing a clean install and it went away after I ran PTW...

I have this same error message. I do not have an unreasonably large number of fonts, weird programs running, or any thing else. Any help?

I was playing civ3 fine one day, went on vacation for 4 days, came back and boom - same error.
Nothing had changed on my computer from the time it worked from the time it didn't.
Also, I barely have any fonts (window fonts) loaded since I don't have office.
I uninstalled the game and reinstalled it. I have Civ3 gold.

I got it again, recently. The trick for me was shutting down all other starting programs (Run; msonfig; startup) down to a bare minimum, the mere necesseties. It happened again, and I used the ctrl+alt+delete method to turn off all other programs, again down to the bare necesseties. It then ran fine, for me, with no error. Try doing something like that, hopefully it will work for you, too. It seems there are many different causes for this bug, with different solutions to each cause. None of the listed solutions on any site I could find worked, so I really truly don't know wat the deal with it is. I hope my method will work for you, too.

Error loading font:(Error code 28)!! ~= out of memory error
I think this error is really supposed to be an out of memory error. I tried the "close all programs" solution, but was reluctant to shut off my anti-virus program, and I still got the error.
After I closed all programs, including the anti-virus application, I guess I provided enough memory for Civ3 to run properly.
The system requirements listed on the box are lower than actual.
