If you havent before I dont suggest you do...
dont dead-lift, squat, and do ab excercises all in the same work out. It makes it impossible to walk

Squat and deadlift are very taxing. To ensure that you have optimal energy to execute, you should always do them on seperate days.

Actually I always squat and deadlift on the same day. Thats what you have to do in competition so its worthwhile to train that way (at least some of the time) Also, they use very similar muscle groups so it's easy to overtrain if you do multiple leg and back days in a week. In one week I train (day 1) heavy squat -light DL and (day 4) light squat-heavy DL.

Squat and DLing freak me out. I'm tall and its all too easy to screw up my lower back muscles. I'll have a crack if I'm in the gym but I do most of my workout at home. Any suggestions for a home workout?

I was a little bit hasty to use the word "always" in my last post. I should have asked you your age because it does make a difference to what level of workout intensity a person can handle. I'm in my mid 30's. I'm not trying to compete, but I am trying to build mass so I go heavy every day. I don't work a body part more than once a week except abs. I do Squats & Stiff Leg DL's weekly for legs and I do powerlift DLs for back every other week.

I don't know about a home workout routine, but I will say something about squat & DLs. They are the best excercises you can do for building muscle mass and overall strength. Don't be afraid of them, but study the proper excercise form thoroughly before attempting. Get a trainer, get a video, read a book. Start with very light weight. Don't try to move up in weight too quickly. Get someone to spot you until you feel confident. You will be pleased with the results.

both are great excercises but both can really **** up your back if you do them wrong.
edit: just remembered theres also a lovely picture of what can happen if you try to squat too much at rotten.com, its title is simply "weightlifter".

I do both. Machines are good for targetting a specific muscle group, but freeweights are good doing larger movements, like deadlifts, clean and jerks, snatches, etc.
I always do a round on the machines, something aerobic, another round on the machines and then freeweights

I never do cardio prior to lifting. It saps you of energy necessary to lift as heavy as possible. After my lifting for the day is done, I will do half hour of cardio.
I try to fit in as many compound excercises into my routine as possible. Squats, DL, Bench Press. I only use free weights as machines restrict your range of motion and limit the amount of muscle fiber that can be recruited for the excercise. I believe isolation excercise like PecDec for example are a waste of time.

Well, my routine tends to be..
12 mins treadmill (2% incline, run as fast as I can = around 2.3km at the moment)
2 sets of 8, 1 set to failure on about 10 machines at 63kg (about 140 pounds I think).
12 minutes bike
swim 300 metres

Thats quite a cardio workout there with the swimming included. So your lifting is designed to keep everything toned as opposed to building muscle mass, then? Sounds like you would be good at long distance running with the cardio endurance you require for your workouts.

at first I was going to say you're an overweight tub of fat/muscle, but then you mentioned your height and weight and it became clear, youre just bigger than most people.
I usually do about 15 minutes on the tredmill at a brisk jog, then go lift machines and freeweights (the only machines I use are leg press and lat machine), and then I finish up with 20-30 minutes on the tredmill (depending on how I feel, I like being tired after I work out) going at a brisk jog again with the last 5-10 minutes walking. But I havent worked out in about a month and a half, just havent felt like it.
