I had just gotten to my 12:30pm Monday/Wednesday class. I guess both my mom and stepdad were home, maybe less than a quarter-mile away. Me? Twelve miles to the north.
I thank you all for your kind words, understanding, sympathy, and general comments. Although some of it is difficult to hear right now, I absolutely agree that euthanasia would likely have been the course of action if her condition was serious enough that she'd needlessly suffer for her remaining years/months/days.
She at least went without pain thanks to the valium the vet gave her in her final hours. I'm just glad I decided to be by her side through the night. I know she was grateful for that much.

I'm sorry that MarkG got to your kitty
But seriously, remember the good times with Sam and look for another opportunity to rescue an animal in need.

Unfortunately, my stepdad has had several pets (mostly cats) over the years, and he was just so tired of losing them to old age or accidents. He didn't want to have another pet, but Sam adopted us the day we met her. She was my first pet, probably won't be my last, but I don't think Richard...or my mom for that matter...want another pet in the house. I would love to give an equally good home to another creature that was abused/abandoned by it's previous owners, as is what happened with Samantha, but my parents won't likely go for it anytime in the remotely foreseeable future. And I'm ok with that.
We've settled on a private cremation for her. Her ashen(sp?) remains will be home sometime next week.

My mom honestly wanted to bring the corpse home and bury it somewhere around the house. That's just damned creepy to me. *Shudder...*
Uhng...I just refered to my precious kitty as "the corpse"!?!?! WAAAAAAA!!!

Sorry about your loss.
I think the reference was to the Apolyton "Save the kittens!" campaign.

i had two dogs, golden retrievers, named Molly and Dolly . . . Dolly died last year, and for about 2 months after that, Molly was really depressed. wouldn't eat hardly anything, was not active at all, she'd just sit around and whine all day. After a while, she started eating and playing again, but I thought it remarkable that she actually seemed. . . depressed, as if she noticed the loss and was sad for it somehow.
I'd never thought of animals having any kind of emotions until I saw how Molly acted after her sister died. Your story helps confirm this point as well, thanks for sharing it.
My condolences for you loss.

Animal psychologists have found a great deal of evidence that many higher-level animals do indeed experiance, or suffer from, emotions that are very similar to our own. Sam was terribly frightened, you could see it in her eyes, but just having someone there stroking her fur and talking to her had a calming effect. I'm glad I could give her that much.
My next door neighbors had a similar situation to your's, Connorkimbro. Sport and Bobo, black lab and Scottish terrior(sp?), had been together for years. The ravages of age caught up to Bobo and he eventually had to be euthanized before the cancer could eat him whole. Sport was devastated. He went from a rambuncious dog racing around wanting to play with any nearby person or dog to a lathargic lump of black-furred flesh on the ground. A few months later he joined Bobo in the hereafter.

Anne's cat Cat died back in March and Anne's still mourning. Cat was at least 18 yrs old, was deaf, arthritic and partially blind, but still an important member of the household.

OOh damn
I really dread the day when it's one of my cats turn...
No matter what they say Drose, get another kitty ASAP, people who like cats couldn't possibly say no it, no matter what.
Especially to a 'found' homeless one.
Keep strong mate,

I remember the first stray dog my SO rescued from the streets...
It's so bloody loyal to her it tries to guard against me sometimes. Silly thing.

Im fascinated w/ death. Mmmm
My chinchilla died 11-9-03 about midnightish too. Animals seems to recognize their death is imminent, just like people and that fascinates me. Their behavior changes drastically before they become seriously ill and die. Its a sad thing to see something you raised for long time die, but witnessing death in front of ur eyes is something else.
11-9-03 RIP, Big L.

The symptoms you initially described reminded me of Che's cat Annie- aka the Slobbering Anarchist. She was an adorable little kitty that everybody fell in love with. She also died of kidney failure several years ago.
Sorry about your loss.

My condolences
I almost lost my cat this year to an extreme allergic reaction, she's getting better now but half her head is still covered in blisters. Its in times like this you realise your cat means more to you then most people on this planet, warped but true.

Very common among cats. Especially when on a dry food diet, make sure they drink !!
