Me too. My guess is that he was being (as Spikey so eloquently put it) self-deprecating.
Or that his poor use of english is due to him being still drunk after Latvia qualified for Euro 2004

Self-deprecating is correct by the way.
I've never heard self-depreciating before, but it makes sense and would have the same meaning. Those funny things that happen on either side of the pond.
