we orginally had the tape deck. It used to take 20 or 30 minutes for Bruce Lee to load . You had to be careful not to bump it or it would screw up the load. And you never seemed to find out if the load screwed up until it was finished.

We eventually got a disk drive. We had to use the lay-away plan for both the C64 and disc drive. But eventually we got it. It was like night and day. The discs ruled!

20 or 30 minutes? That's very slow even for cassettes. But agreed on the only screwing up at the last possible second.

Diss has it right. The very first game I bought for my C64 - actually the same day as I bought my C64 - was Valhalla, the adventure game. On tape.

It took 22 minutes to load. 22 long minutes.

20-30 mins!? While tapeloading was a pain it didnīt last that long if you used speedloaders like "->L", "ABC Turbo" or the loaders that were included on cartridges like the MK3 or the Powercartridge (Dutch C64 owners will remember that little red box sticking out at the back).

vovan,

Spot on !!! It was rather a big give away .. Id cut the top section of the screen off, as it said "SPELLBOUND (c)1984 David Jones" or something or other on it.

Great games, Finished all of them also.

Well after suffering with tape decks on the TRS-80, the Vic 20 and my roommate's stupid TI machine, when it came to trade up to a C64, the disk drive was the way to go. I pretty much blew a whole two weeks paycheck on it, just barely made rent that month....but then I did not have any games for a few months. Anyway at the time, there were only about 6-10 games available for it (locally). and those were not cheap either.
