Computor geek needed
So I went on line about an hour ago, checked my e-mail, deleted unopened the usual 10 - 20 unsolicited pieces of spam, read the 2 real e-mails then went to Apolyton and nationstates.net...
This message popped up four or five times, as I moved from screen to screen :
Quote:
|
A required .DLL file, WS2_32.DLL, was not found.
|
What does it mean ? I've never seen it before, should I be worried ?

If you use XP, you may boot from the CD, and attempt the "repair" function.

I use Windows'95. Everything appears normal. Any idea what a "DLL file, WS2_32.DLL" does?
Maybe I never had one to begin with...

Thank you for the link. But before I download it, do you have any idea what it is used for ? As I mentioned, everything seems to be working allright. I'd hate to download a file that makes spam tastier to my computer.

Oh wait, heres something
ws2_32 - ws2_32.dll - DLL Information
DLL File: ws2_32 or ws2_32.dll
DLL Name: WinSock 2.0 32bit
Description: Contains the Windows Sockets API used by most internet and network applications to handle network connections
System DLL: Yes
Common Errors: File Not Found, Missing File, Exception Errors
Solution: Download WinTasks to find out which application is using this DLL. Many problems can be solved by resinstalling this application. If the DLL is missing, download it to your windows system folder.

Since I'm not on a network and everything else seems to be working, should I bother downloading it ?
Do you have one on your machine ?

Have you run a scan for viruses and spyware?
If you aren't running any programs that attempt to connect to the net at random times, then chances are you don't want whatever it is to succeed in connecting to the net.

That's what I was wondering, if it could be some sort of spyware. I have a rather old virus program that may not detect some of the stuff out there. As I mentioned, I'm not having any operational problems. I started to receive the message shortly after deleting unopened a bunch of spam e-mail, but haven't seen the message for about an hour now...

You can get the AVG anti-virus personal edition for free if you are so included. A lot of slimeware stuff aren't caught by scanners, though. You need ad-aware and spybot search-and-destroy for those.

You could also use bit torrent online virus scan and BPS spyware remover, both are very fast and industrial strength.

A 'DLL' is a Dynamic Link Library. Besides the memory advantages, it's easier to update a DLL rather than a whole executable. It should be in your Windows\System folder. It's in mine and probably everyone else's around here (except for the Linux geeks. )

How come it's always, "Computor Geek Needed", and never, "Computer Geek Wanted"?

I've been online for about an hour today and the message hasn't appeared. I wonder if the message could have been generated by a piece of pop up advertising here at Apolyton.
Since I use an older system, I'm frequently offered upgrades and downloads as I surf. This request was rather aggressive though.
So... should my header have been "Computer Technical Expertise Needed"?
