New guy needs Multi player help...

Hello all, I am new to these forums and this may not be in the correct forum. I have CtP2 version 1.2, I am trying to connect to the internet and all my program does is 'wait for servers'. Is there another patch I need to get? Also if I know the IP address of a friend of mine how can I "hook up" with him? Please offer any advice/help you have on this. I enjoy the game very much and have been wanting to play my friend who is just a couple of miles away. We both have DSL internet connection by the way.
