Proposal to change the Forum Name
In view of the main use of this forum in these :sob: days of decline :sob:, I would like to propose that this forum be re-named:
Civ2 - General/Help/Succession

If you really want to change the name of our little corner of the net then why not just Civ 2 General?
I don't see the need for a subforum for SXN games, or even a name change to reflect their near dominance.
We still want people to come here to play the OCC and early landing comparisons!

How about this?
I agree that succession gaming needs a better identity, but would tweak you idea a bit, Stu, with a nod to the duke's thought.
Change Strategy to General/Help/Strategy.
Change General/Help to Succession/Comparison Games.
This way, there's no net change in the number of forums; they're just reorganized a bit more logically.

I'd like to see two forums - Civ 2 General and Civ 2 Strategy/Help. That'd be the best situation as far as I'm concerned. Then people who are having trouble with the technical side can go and ask in the strategy forum, and the spammy "which is your favourite unit" polls can go here.

I think if you would like to see forum usage increased, you should give it a more attractive name. A name that says to users, "You want to find out what's in there". Something like "Civ 2 - Electric Boogaloo"..

Though -Jrabbit makes a logical suggestion (by function), I favor Stu's offering. It has the value of not making a hash of any future archive.

Another vote for JRabbits proposal. Succession and Comparison games push General and Help threads down too quickly. Combine General and Help with Strategy and maybe they will look in the Great Library first before asking what an SSC is for the Nth time...

JRabbit's proposal is good. But what will happen with all those old threads? Or is it posible to join Strategy and General forums and to move several tens of threads to a new Succession/Comparison forum (edited - formerly thread)?

Certainly Succession/Comparison games deserve their own forum every bit as much as PBEM and iirc 3 democracy games.
General/Help per se is seldom used outside the games we post there -- just an occasional inquiry. Similarly, Strategy is rarely used for new topics these days. It's mostly a gateway to the GL. That's why I suggested combining them.
Civ2 is well-explored. Its fora should emphasize where its current popularity lies -- in the various ways it is played, keeping this game fresh and vital for all.
It seems my proposal has some support. Interested to see what Stu thinks. Let's find a consensus and bring it to the site owners!

I agree, but my questions still remain:
Is it technically possible to reorganize forums? More intimately...
1. Is it possible to join two forums?
2. Is it possible to take several tens of threads and move them to the new (Succession/Comparison) forum?
3. Is there any volunteer for such a work among us?

I don't think the general should be dropped......this is the right forum for general Civ2 related queries. But given the extent of succession gaming it probably deserves a reference.

FYI:
About a year ago I had a PM discussion with Ming re the prospect of creating a Succession/Comparison forum - we decided that doing this would effectively kill off General/Help and possibly even Strat as well
My proposal was predicated on the assumption that there could not be a thread reorganisation, just a re-naming -- perhaps, given the obvious 12-3 agreement in favour of some new approach, we should make some polite enquiries as to what is poaaible and what just ain't going to happen ...

I'm interested that we've yet to have, if not an "official" response, then at least a response from an official - probably Ming saying that it would take hours to identify what went where and a huge amount of time to switch them all.

I must be quite conservative, although I am not that old
I voted to keep it that way.
I think it's either a new place, specially for succession games, either like it is now. I find other names too long.
By the way, the general/help is the only one I am visiting these days (shame on me)

Why not have a look at the Strategy forum before you finish cleaning room 2953 at The Institute ?

Jrabbit's proposal sounds good.
And, AFAIK, it is possible to move threads from one forum to another.

1. Yes
2. Yes
3. not me.
I like it the way it is now. I don't think we need any changes. The current form supports what has been, what is, and what is likely to happen in the future.
