Apolyton Pub Quiz Championships
Anyone interested in a Pub Quiz championship? The way a pub quiz work is you have 2 people in a chat room (for argument's sake Apolyton's IRC channel). The quizmaster asks a question and the first to answer it gets a point. There are 21 questions, and the winner is the one who can answer the most.
It would probably be knockout format, split into two divisions - American (that is, US, Canada, Latin America, China, Oceania) and European (speaks for itself). The winner of each half plays eachother in the final for the title of ultimate Pub Quiz champion. The time of challenge will be set out by mutual agreement by each competitor, and a quizmaster will be appointed in one way or another (more than likely volunteering).
All interested should post here along with the division they wish to compete in.

Who'd be the quizmaster?
I'd chip in with a few questions via PM when you've decided who'll do the quizzing.
I suggest that those who wish to know the answers to these questions set up a PayPal account.

I'll be happy to take on quizzing duties if it fits in my highly busy ( ) schedule. Others can volunteer too.

is it just me, or does that not make ANY sense at all?. Ok, i can see canada, and MAYBE latin america (though that's a stretch. But china? or oceania? (which, if i'm not mistaken, includes alot more than australia and new zealand)

Well, it's difficult to give it a name. You can't say western because, Aus/NZ/China are Eastern. I suppose Pacific would be better.

Back in my younger days I would win my friends $50 of free beer every weekend at some bar that had a trivia contest every night. My secret? I wasn't drunk.

Righty-ho, the channel for the Championships is #pubquiz
If you don't know how to get there, got to http://apolyton.net/chat , then click on "Java Chat". When logged onto the chatroom, type in /join #pubquiz and you are there.
The tournament format is as follows (subject to change):
You will play 3 games against competitors in your conference. You will challenge them to a match, and you may not challenge anyone twice unless you have challenged everyone else in your conference. At the end of the "Round Robin", the 4 people with the highest win percentage* in their conference will advance to the next round. Then a straight knockout ensues with 1st in the conference playing 4th, 2nd playing 3rd, winners play in the Conference final, with the grand final being played between the winner of the Pacific Conference playing the European Winner.
*percentage is worked out by your win/loss ratio (e.g. 1 win and two losses is a 33% percentage). The tie breaker for those with the same percentage is the amount of questions correctly answered.
I hereby announce the first match-ups will be in the period December 5th - December 8th. You will need to challenge somebody in your conference to a match-up. It is up to you to get a quizmaster for your match in this period, however this should hopefully not be the case in the play-offs.

You'll obviously need some way to overcome lag and ping.
For an American GM, the American contestent has a whole 0.2 more seconds to think about their answer - which is quite unbalancing given that my reaction time is 0.15 seconds...
What you'd have to do, is do a 'ping-time-test', and then guage time responses.
The simple way:
Have the GM say "3"
Then a second later, say "2"
Then a second later say "1"
And have everyone anticipate when to say "0".
This will give a decent idea of everyone's ping time, with reaction time negated.
As for me, my net is laggy, and is pre-emptively blamed for any loss I incurr.

i dont think that'll be too much of a problem...if anything you'll have an advantage anyways, since Frozzy is in New Zealand.

I fear that any effort to counter lag will overcompensate. If you're lagged, you're lagged. Sorry. If it were for money or something it might be a little more considerable but it's just a cheap title.

I can't imagine that a bunch of people volunteering to perform "question" duty in a quiz game not of their devising are going to worry about lag. I was actually going to sign up, but then I read the lag post and said "why bother."
