The summer of '89 I drove from Phili to NYC. I left the interstate one turn off too early and ended up in "Omega Man", NJ. Actually, I have no idea what the "suburb" was called, but it consisted mostly of burned out buildings, most of which still seemed to have people living in them.
I didn't stop to explore. Maybe Dubbya should summer there ? (I know Imran is from eastern NJ, maybe he knows what its called.)

Definitely honorable mention. We were driving from Colorado to California for a wedding and decided to stop in Reno and get a hotel, as neither of us could safely go on. After about an hour of trying to get around and find a hotel that wasn't a complete pain in the ass, we drove out of there to Truckee California. By comparison Truckee was paradise.

Dragör, Denmark. Not a real city but a neighborhood in Copenhagen. We stopped at a gas station to get a hot dog. Then, for some reason, the manager started to follow us around in our car......

Hoboken? Orange?
I don't know much about around NYC or Philly. I tended to avoid those parts of Jersey. The rest of it was SOOOO much better .

I have been all over Jersey and have yet to see anything that compares in sheer desolation to Philadelphia.
(Except for maybe Camden...but I blame Philly for that too)

I liked Bangkok. You have to understand it is a third world country but once that sinks in things aren't so bad. The international hotels are great and there are plenty of things to see. The royal palace, the floating market, the old main city market place, Wat after wat after wat after wat...
It's also interesting to go to the tourist district just to look around. Sure you will be mobbed by prostitutes but there are lots of bargins to be had in fack western designer goods & computer software plus the food is world class if you go to the right places.

I did say i liked it . It just took some getting used to. I got a culture shock to say the least. I'm a laid back kind of guy and Bangkok is definately not a laidback kind of city. I was only there on a stopover for a couple of days but I saw the sites and they were nice. The food OTOH, it tasted good but it just wasn't compatible with my system

I hope to go to Stockholm, Montreal or Tokyo some day - I hear that Japanese, Swedish and Canadian folk have brains...

And look under it. That's a likely place to find them. There are actually social security clerks in Finland who tell their clients to abuse the Nordic Agreement of Free Movement and move to Stockholm because the social security benefits are better there (just to remove the thrashy yunkies from their own district, off course). Most of the homeless in Stockholm are Finns.

I thought Tokyo was much cleaner then most other east Asian cities. It was interesting to go to but I wouldn't go there specifically for a visit. If I was in east Asia I'd totally go back but I've seen all the sights so it's not worth the 16 hour trans-pacific flight.

Is that because Swedish employers don't want to hire Finns or is it for some other reason?

It's for the reason I posted. The Nordic region has an agreement of free movement of any citizen between the countries. Sweden has a system of quite generous social security benefits. An unemployed alcoholic could get the rent payed (in a junky apartment), and some money for food. Some Finnish social security clerks tell their clients to move to Sweden, just to save Finnish tax payer's money.
But then the junkies are too proud to ask for social security money or they don't qualify for other reasons. and are doomed to hit the street.

I can't believe this thread could have went so far without anyone mentioning Baltimore. It's the worst place that ever existed. In the summer, it's suffocatingly hot, and the traffic is reminiscent of scenes of trains in India... terrible. Plus, it's impossible to go there without getting lost. I once tried to find Eutaw Street and almost ended up in Pennsylvania.
That said, I have to second NYC. The only thing I liked about going to New York was kicking a pigeon in Central Park. That was fun.
