Kan. town requires homes to have guns
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
GEUDA SPRINGS, Kan. -- Residents of this tiny south-central Kansas community have passed an ordinance requiring most households to have guns and ammunition.
Noncomplying residents would be fined $10 under the ordinance, passed 3-2 earlier this month by City Council members who thought it would help protect the town of 210 people. Those who suffer from physical or mental disabilities, paupers and people who conscientiously oppose firearms would be exempt.
"This ordinance fulfills the duty to protect by allowing each individual householder to provide for his or her protection," said Councilman John Brewer.
"This is simply using the U.S. Constitution - Second Amendment in particular - to the city of Geuda Springs' advantage."
Geuda Springs has no local police force; the Sumner County Sheriff's department is responsible for policing the area. Sheriff Gerald Gilkey said the ordinance makes him concerned for the safety of his officers.
"This throws up red flags," he said.
The town's city attorney, Thomas Herlocker, also opposes the measure, which has not taken effect because it has yet to be published. He said he plans to ask the council to reverse itself on the issue. The council meets next on Dec. 1.
Whitney Watson, a spokesman for Attorney General Phill Kline, declined to comment on the legality of such an ordinance, which is similar to one passed in Kennesaw, Ga., 21 years ago that is still in effect.
Many Geuda Springs residents refused to talk about it, and others were tightlipped, saying outsiders should stay out of it.
"It's nobody's business but our own," said Phillip Russell, who owns a motorcycle shop in the town. "Everybody out of town is making this their business."

and the best thing on it: since they have no police force, how will they ever get one cent frome these "criminals"?

New Castle, where my dad is from, has a population of 619 and a night watchman.
Meth labs have taken over.
Sounds like this place might be onto something.

Is it just as horrendous to require citizens to have something than to require them to not have it?
(Yes, yes, I know it said there was exceptions for short-bus-riders, etc., and objectors to guns and related policy. But it's a relevant topic regardless.)

Short bus riders?
Is that considered a hate crime, shooting a short bus rider?

Out of curiosity, don't the Swiss have compulsory gun ownership?

Oh, and compulsory gun ownership is nothing new. Over 20 years ago the city of Kennesaw GA had a similar outcry, with the same predictable hand-wringing that's going on here.

Hand-wringing? Certainly you'd think it a bit much if somebody forced you to buy a car or a TV?

Giving everyone guns is the best thing that could happen to the human species. The reason is all of the morons will shoot themselves and there will be fewer idiots in the gene pool.

Elect them out if you don't like it. Hell, idiots in this country have even elected socialists to office and the Republic still stands. I think a town of 200-odd people whom

Ummm...the last time I checked there were limits to legislative powers, most particularly to protect minorities against the dictatorship of the majority. If I don't want to buy a gun or keep one in my house, or am just too damn lazy to get one then it really shouldn't be any of your business...
Wouldn't you be a bit pissed off if your neighbours told you to buy an electric blender?

My neighbors raise my taxes all the time. To pay for their school, to pay for their roads, to pay for whatever. There is no difference whatsoever in forcing people by legislative fiat to purchase a specific item, or forcing them to pay more taxes in order to provide them with "free" quantities of that item.

Taxation is a valid point of interest for your neighbours. What I buy with my money shouldn't be...
If I'm not raising ebola-infested monkeys in my basement then it's not any of your business...

If your neighbors wanted to "force" everybody to pay $50 for a gun, how is that different from your neighbors raising everybody's taxes by a like amount so the government can hand out "free" guns? Or health care? Or whatever?

Because then I don't have to keep a gun in my house. If they want to raise taxes and hand out a free gun to whoever wants one, then I'd be okay with it...

Naw, the difference is you like health care, not guns.
But seriously, this is the same principle the Left has been beating the uneducated about the head for the past 150 years: Nanny state, the government knows better in its collective wisdom than you do with your individual presumptions, crapola like that. Why do you not go for it here, when you proclaim its efficacy elsewhere?

I just said I have no problem with raising taxes and giving out free guns. I might disagree with it, but it doesn't piss me off like this does.
My government doesn't force me to go to the doctor...it just pays for me when I do go.

We haven't stopped them but at least in California we've made it harder for these people looking for "freebies". Making them get a 2/3 majority instead of a simple majority sure does slow down the tax increases.

Me too!
When I was with the B.I.A. (Bureau of Indian Affairs) in the 70's I carried a Model 10 Smith & Wesson and used a CCI Super Sphere rated at 1280 fsc (Hollow Point,Copper-Jacket)
I too fel it is an all around good handgun.
I however still favor what i used in the Military Police, Colt .45!
As for the response for the thread about the citizens being "forced" or "required" to stock an arsenal of any size, I am against this for if folks have a firearms cache then they may use first and ask second, for without proper training a person could be innocently killed, with a larger caliber firearm in the hands of a novice, make that a NERVOUS-NOVICE IN AN INTENSE situation they may "pull" the trigger and miss the intended intruder and kill an innocent bystander, even a child or a neighbor coming to their aid..
Just my unsolicited $0.02 worth is all
Peace
Grandpa Troll
P.S.
Is this the picture of the Town Councilman whom came up with this?

The best argument against this idea yet.

If you don't want to buy the gun, just conscientiously object. The bill provides this loophole, and does not seem to restrict who may conscientiously object.
That's what makes this requirement laughable.
