So A Straight Guy Walks Into a Gay Bar...
Well, I went to a gay bar tonight, for the first time in my life. I was downtown on 6th St. with a (gay) friend, and he asked if I was comfortable with going to a gay bar for a while. I said sure, that's cool, so we went.

It was an interesting experience - just thought I'd share. Wasn't really uncomfortable, though. My friend told the bartender this was my first time in a gay bar, and I got a free drink and a "bless your heart" out of it, and another bartender said I was cute.

So, for straight people, are you uncomfortable going to gay bars? And for gay people, are you uncomfortable in straight bars?

not at all. there's this bar called 'Rome' over on lark street in downtown albany. i went there a few times with my Ex, amanda. it was a blast. i'd sit back and watch her make out with the lesbians (alas, none of them were up for a 'MP game' as it were), and i usually was hit on by random gay guys, and was bought drinks, cutting my bar tab in half, sometimes more. and i had an absolutely gorgeous GF to go home with at the end of the night.

My SO and I went into one once just to see what it's like once. Interesting, though she got hit a lot more than I did, and she is the one who found the concept of "doing it" with a MOTSS repulsive. We left somewhat quickly to prevent her temper flaring up, beating up people in the process.

I went to a transvestite bar once. But that probably doesn't count - there were no other people there really.

Being somewhat asexual/bisexual, I am okay around both heterosexual camps and homosexual camps.

I hate bars though, for I hate what alcohol does to people.

I know you can get homosexual camps but can you get heterosexual camps?

And I am surprised no one has said this yet but:

I tend to avoid gay bars/events because I do not like to be taken for a gay (but I don't have anything against them).

But I was in Manchester for the 1999-2000 NYE and we were looking for a club to party in. Every club refused us the entry because we weren't dressed well enough. Anyway, we arrived on (C)anal street, continuing our quest, and miracle: the security guy of this club allowed us to enter!!
1 min later, we realise that there is not a single woman around. We had a drink and left. We weren't willing to be there for the happy new year thing...

We finally ended in a DeathMetal club called the Jelly, or the Jolly, or something like that... Not better,...

Not uncomfortable, just absolutely bored...

I need cute flirtatious female bartenders and sporting events to round out my drinking experience. There's only so many Village people wanna-bes and blaring Madonna remixes a guy can take in one sitting.

I've been to a few gay bars with gay friends. I don't really feel uncomfortable, I just get bored because I'm not into the kind of music they play.

When I was in junior college I lost a bet with a gay class mate about who was better at Doom. Any way my "punishment" was I had to go with him and his boyfriend to a gay bar here in San Diego. It actually turned out to be pretty fun because a bunch of our friends came along to and the bar had this 300 pound man who dressed up like a woman and who songs like Dina Ross's "I will survive"!

The place had great drink specials too.

The first bar I ever went to was actually a gay bar, back in my innocent teens. In fact, I went there just after coming out of an Anne Summers sex shop (you Brits out there will know what I mean). I was so innocent that I didn't realize it was a sex shop for the first few minutes. I saw all the lingerie and thought it was a normal underwear shop, with those weird "ethnic looking candles" on the shelves.

The shop assistant told me that they were dildoes.

It stands as a mute testament to my surpassing naivete that I had to ask her what those were.

damn xpost

Our female friends used to drag us (no pun intended) to gay bars all the time in Chicago. Some of them were pretty cool. I liked Roxxy's, but never went into the Manhole. (!!)

David Floyd, did you get in a dance off like in the American Wedding? I hear that's mandatory if it's your first time.

never been into the manhole myself, but you have to admit, they always have some really bizarre and occasionally funny quips on their sign.

i was always amused by a thai restaurant up in boystown called bangkok.

Cute.

Also went to Spin (what Roxxy's turned into) and Berlin. My most 'knowledgeable' experience occurred on Halloween years ago @ Berlin. I was dressed in my typical jeans and black leather jacket and combat boots. Was dancing with my GF when this BIG black man in a pink tutu and wand asked her, "Is this your man?" Grabbed me by the arm, and pulled me toward him, "I want him!" All I could do was stare at her with eyes pleading, "HELP!!" 2 seconds later (an eternity) he said, "Naw, just kidding!" And let me go. Of course, she thought it was hilarious; I was shaking.

Lesson learned? DON'T wear leather to gay bars.
