worst starting position ever !!!!!!!
Map size 32X32
4 human players
I took mongols and found myself on the south pole sent setlers out (one to the left one to the right) when my settlers met in 3200 bc I realised that I was stuck on the pole
Has anyone had worse than this ?

hydey... that's a tough one to beat

Actually, I've started out on the pole before, and I think it was a 40x50 map. You play with 4 players on a 32x32 map and somebody's bound to get screwed.

Yeah, I came last in Hydey's Arctic Capers game. Makeo found me very early on and wiped me out. Except I was hosting, Civs were checked not to restart, the host transfer screwed up ... and the game disappeared down the plughole into Civ history! I can proudly claim to have come last in a winnerless game!
PS: Hydey, all you had to do was build on the tundra, wait for Map Making, build a boat and slip across to some land. Chee. Talk about a whinger.

I had those starts in civ2.42. So I could imagine that sooner or later someone gets a start like this in MP.
Next time feel free to insist on a restart .

We play on small small worlds and I will let someone call for a restart if that occurs.

We had a few restarts for techs and one for terrain. When Hydey asked for a restart off the ice I told him to stop whining - it would be a test of his ingenuity. Best part was, he bought it

i host small worlds with small land mass, 5 or 6 civs kingx2x2.
i play purple and go last so if anyone starts on the pole it is me. starting on the pole is fun. ive won 3 games that way out of ~30 played from the pole. Sometimes i dont have a way off the pole. i build a city on the turndra with a whale and hopefully a fur. i go straight for map making.

Hydey actually went right around the world too, about 20 turns worth of play. We didn't know he had no access to land at all, he'd been making jokes about such a thing earlier so I for one didn't believe him for a long time. I actually saw one of settlers go past my island on the fringe of the map.
When finbar got eliminated he finally convinced us it was true, after a plaintive "what do I do now" message when his settlers met. The game folded anyway because the host didn't transfer. I wonder how long we could have kept him playing
We couldn't believe a. that he went along with it and b. that he kept playing as long as he did. After the game, finbar went into Hydey's civ and confirmed that what he had been saying was true. He was playing Mongol.
Lucky he wasn't telling us he was having a heart attack:
"Get up you wimp"
"Yeah right Hydey, next you'll be saying your stuck in the ice on the edge of the map."

I've seen some polar starts before, but never with no access to mainland.
You deserve credits for playing such a start anyway. I'll be definitely asking for restart.

In actual fact, in that last game, we offered him restarts a number of times. Along with Horse's charitable, "Play it as it lies, wimp". His responses to our offers were along the lines of ... "Don't worry, I always lose anyway". Some people.

They did offer me a restart but with my skills improving I thought it fair to give them all a head start. finbar was destroyed and had the game continued the others were obviously in trouble from the mongol eskimoes. My plan was to have Makeo crush the others and then lull him into a false sense of security until ready for my world famous sneek attack

Finbar raises an interesting point about Australian male culture. I've had a few spats with Ming on the OT about it. Now that he sees the way we talk to each other maybe he'll understand me better when I say "its a cultural thing."
Hmmm, culture may not be the right word

You realise of course that now that I have posted that comment above, anything that we do from now on can only be seen as parody?
I've trappped us all in our idiom
