Well, there are a lot of movies I simply don't get a chance to see until they make it to video.
I should have added Antwoine Fisher.
The Pianist was good, but over the years I've seen many many films with the same basic plot.

"The Pianist was good, but over the years I've seen many many films with the same basic plot."
I don't know, I thought that the plot was pretty distinctive - a man struggling to evade a fascist regime... holed up in an apartment...
The only other film I can think of like it is "Au Revoir Les Enfants" which is itself quite different in many respects.
My top ten of 2002:
#10 - Spider-Man
#9 - Minority Report
#8 - Chicago
#7 - 8 Women
#6 - Spirited Away
#5 - Far From Heaven
#4 - Adaptation
#3 - The Pianist
#2 - Catch Me If You Can
#1 - Metropolis

Dissident, my wife and I like to see at least one movie a week. We usually see the best of the new openings. That adds up to 52 movies a year, which is a lot.

I'm hearing Oscar buzz for Johnny Depp. I think he should at least be nominated.

Was Pirates of the Carribean that good? The trailers turned me off. I have no tolerance for movies that rely on horror shock to substitute for quality scripting, acting and etc., and I thought the ghost pirates plot was just a little too much. Maybe I'll catch sometime.
Depps performance in "Chocolat" was very good.

well it's on video now, so I guess I'll see it. I admit I was skeptical as well. A pirate movie? But I guess I'll see it now.

Yeeeeah... pirates of the carribean was the second best movie of the year, although I have to admit, it loses something on the small screen. It was one of the best theatergoing experiences I've ever had.

Pirates is a lot of fun if you a.) watch it on the big screen, or b.) watch it with a bunch of friends. It's not that deep a movie otherwise, so watching it alone is not advisable.
As far as the "horror shock" goes...there's really no horror shock. The acting is great (Johnny Depp and Geoffry Rush? How can you go wrong?), the script is well-written, especially for Depp, and it's really a memorable movie.
Also, about the ghost pirate plot: 1.) there are no ghosts in this story, and 2.) its based on the actual disney theme ride

I also noticed Matchstick Men didn't make a single list ! (including mine)
Movie could make my "best list", but Cage deserves an Oscar nomination, at least.

Finally saw Love Actually. Very funny & touching movie. Very well written and excellent direction. Also the best sound editing of a non "epic" type movie I've experienced in a while.

Mystic river has both good acting and a good plot. But to you this kind of movie is boring.
Tells me a lot about you KH.

It played like some film student's first project, where he doesn't yet understand that shock value does not equal quality.

When pirates came out on DVD, my daughter rushed out and bought it. I was not expecting much from this disney production, but I was pleasantly surprised.
Johnny Depp was great. (of course this role was perfect for him) and while I doubt that any disney flic is going to do well in the more prestigious award shows, Johnny deserves mention.
Thinking that it was based on a amusement park ride, I was pleased that it actually had a plot. It was fun for all ages and was one of the better movies I saw this year.

BEST
1. ROTK - Ain't no way this one is going to disappoint me - Heck, the trailers are better than most movies - Midnight tomorrow...
2. Pirates of the Carribean - It's incredibly fun - watch it on that level.
3. Last Samurai - Sure its almost an exact retread of 'Dances with Wolves', but I'm a sucker for historical set pieces.
4. Master and Commander - ...I'm a sucker for historical set pieces.
Biggest Surprise...
1. X-Men United
Worst...
1. The Core
Most disappointing...
1. Timeline - mainly because I saw it at the same time I saw 'Master' and 'Samauri', which tended to make it look bad in comparison.

In the last two days I saw two great movies from 2003(happens when you get back from college, have time to go to the movies, and you work at a video store)
I now have to change my Best of 2003:
Best Movies of 2003
1. Seabiscuit
2. The Last Samurai
3. Pirates of the Carribean
4. Phone Booth
5. American Splendor
Ken Watanabe (Katsumoto in Last Samurai) should win Best Supporting Actor and Paul Giamatti (American Splendor) should be nominated for Best Actor
