RPG's by setting and relationship to DnD.
Ive begun my first RPG, the CRPG "Baldurs Gate" Its a D and D based RPG, set in the Forgotten Realms. My impression is that FR is one of the most popular settings for D and D, both CRPG's and Pencil and paper, etc. I am aware that there are CRPG's not based on D and D rules.
So - what are the "major" (best selling, best games, most influential, ones you liked best, whatever) computer RPG's in the following categories
1. DandD set in the Forgotten Realms
2. D and D in other settings
3. Other than D and D.

arcanum is not DnD
Exile is not DnD
there is a series of games called the Golden Box set which are all DnD (and forgotten realms), they are older of course
all the Rogues and Roguelikes are not DnD (but similiar)
I have played a number ofotherones as well, don't recall everything
(Bard's Tale was not DnD I believe)

Those are both in the Forgotten Realms, aren't they? (or are the planar worlds not considered part of forgotten realms?)

Yup, i listed 3 categories. Did i not make myself clear? It was my intention that those who responded would say WHICH category the game(s) they named belonged in. IE i was listing the 3 categories for the purpose of doing a "sort" not merely a "select" Since the 3 categories are exhaustive for CRPG's (since i include an "other" category) I thought it was obvious I was asking which category - otherwise id merely have asked (as others have before) which are the best CRPG's.
I guess I'll have to be more explicit next time.

Thank you for clarifying. I asked if it was DnD to see if what category it was in, not to suggest that you had incorrectly posted it. I suppose I could also have asked if it was other than DnD to make myself clearer, but that seemed pointless. If I have 3 exhaustive categories, and something doesnt fall into 1 or 2, obviously it falls into 3. So you could simply have said "no, its not Dnd"

How could anybody forgot about Ultima and Wizardry?
None of these are D&D.

Planescape: Torment is not D&D, and is not based in the forgotten realms. It is based in the planecape universe. It uses modified D&D rules. It bears a strong resemblance to D&D but it is still different enough not to be called D&D.

don't forget Diablo2 and 1
not d&d
Dungeon Seige
not d&d
Morrowind
not d&d by a long shot- very different rules and races.
Many minor games- divine divinity, other diablo clones.
Pool of Radiance is D&D and based on the forgotten realms. I believe the temple of elemental evil is as well.
The forgotten realms by the way (correct me if I'm wrong- I'm no D&D junkie) is the world (or is it just the continent) of many D&D adventures. But there are other universes and such for D&D, but I never really see anything based on that. Games like Baldur's Gate 2 do allow you to travel to some of these planes- like the Haer De (can't spell this bard's name- he's a Teifling) quest that takes you to another plane. Also the planar sphere.

Planescape is DEFINITLY D&D.
D&D games :
Baldur's Gate 1 (and expansion)
Baldurs Gate 2 (and expansion)
Pool of Radiance
Curse of the Azure Bonds
Secret of the Silver Blades
Pools of Darkness
Pool of Radiance 2 (Ruins of Myth Drannor)
Icewind Dale (and 2 expansions)
Icewind Dale 2
Neverwinter Nights (and 2 expansions)
Temple of Elemental Evil
Planescape Torment
Deathknights of Krynn
Two other Dragonlance games (can't remember the names right now)
Ummm... there's probably more.

so it seems like theres a whole lot of RPG's set in Forgotten realms - pools of radiance, IWD, NWN, and a whole bunch of older games. Theres also a whole bunch of RPG's with no relation to DnD, notably fallout, Diablo, deus ex, elder scrolls series, etc.
The only case of a DnD game that is not in a Forgotten Realms setting is Planescape:Torment. Any others?

Temple Of Elemental Evil is D&D not in Forgotten Realms (Geryhawk is the first campaign world for D&D).
And since noone mentionned them, there's Rogue, Nethack, Angband, and other roguelikes which are not D&D and hardly have any universe. But then these are a bit archaic. (before anyone flames me, I still play Nethack).

I enjoyed the Realms of Arkania series which are non D&D and based on a German PnP sytem i think. The games were Blade of Destiny, Star Trail and Shadows over Riva. Bit dated now (the first was an Amiga game) but high on my list of classics.

Ooops. Sorry. Missed that.
Btw ToEE is in Greyhawk but that doesn't really matter much considering it's mostly a big dungeon.
