You can see who is who by the title people have below their user name. E.g. yours says 'Settler', Trip's says 'Emperor', so the two of you are regular gamers (except that Trip has posted a bit more than you )
My title is underlined and says 'ACS CTP1/2 Manager', that means I'm a staff member of this site (responsible for the CtP1 and CtP2 sections). Basically staff members are regular gamers as well, only we were stupid enough to be suckered into helping maintain this site
Members of Firaxis have as title 'Firaxis Games' (also underlined), so you can recognize them by that. The same goes for other game developers from other companies (e.g. Brian Reynolds has as title 'Big Huge Games'). Those are the only actually important people when it comes to developing games.

Locutus,
you forgot one guy.
I recall seeing a report a couple of years ago where Sid Meier listed this site as one of his three favourites on the net.
But if he posts here, it's certainly not under the nick "Sid Meier".

Thanks, Locutus.
you've answered a few questions for me.
First off, how i loose the lowly settler by my name.
second, titles like Staff and Admin refer to site personell, not firaxis peoples, right?

Rank is based on # of posts.
Your profile states you've only posted nine times to this site; that is "Settler" rank.
Your very close to the next ranking up.
Also, after 500 posts, you get to post your own custom avator.

ranking is site specific, and not thread specific, right?
five years from now that question wont mean anything. a matter of vanity, i suppose.

I'd love to see Submarines behaving properly!
The AI doesn't seem to build them either- probably due to the bug- as they are seen, they are effectively a Man o war- I reckon publishing dates took over programming ones
As a titbit: "Son of a gun" derives from old Royal Navy slang to describe this situation:
Warships often put into port for resupply, whilst the RN wouldn't allow the crew to "go abroad", they would allow the Wives and girlfriends aboard whilst at anchor.
Occasionally one of the wifes would go into labour on the vessel, and very rarely would have a difficult birth: As in those days a difficult birth might mean death, The Navy had an answer; They strapped her between two cannons and fired them off- hence "son of a gun". Poor mite.

if naval engagements had some real flavor, it might play a different strategy. Since about a week after getting my copy of Civ3 i've played pangaea and warred 100% on land. i haven't built a ship in years.

Yep,
In pantagea, you still get annoying Ironclads destroying your improvements- and that warship will do it forever- even if better employed defending the capital as it is about to cease to exist- mind you. a single shot by an artillery piece removing one tiny bit of an Ironclads' "life" bar will send it scurrying to a home town 5000 squares away- doh!! The AI makes me laugh-I just destoyed the Babylonians by 3 attacks on the capital. They sent out no less than 8 units to capture 3 worker units of mine on one square too far away- so funny, so pathetic- they no longer exist.
I never declare war, bar once in early days, I try to goad the rest into one, whilst always respecting my allies (2 at most)- What is your style of play all?

bayraven,
Your rank is dictated by post numbers, but any self-respecting human shouldn't care where they are- I hate this elitism some boards go for- I talk crap often, whilst others post sensible posts. Ensure you are treated as an equal- that is all that matters- elitism is a curse, I've seen board members on another site post "ok" to get the rating up- very sad. We are all equal, and our experience of each game is similar, or different, or exactly the same as someone else on the net.
Don't ever lose your own identity by wishing you might be a "commander" or some such other crap.

Toby,
thanks for that. I have four or five major passions in life. History, politics, God, family and CIV (not necc. in that order) So far i've found threads to post on all passions except God, so i posted thought on Him in the picture thread.
The need for legitimacy (rank) that you recognized from some post of mine (i don't think it was this thread) has been answered. i think i might have been a little to excited, having now been accused of being a DL

DL?
What's that?
I just spent about an hour posting a post about nation and region- it's gone, only one religion out of Buddism, Hindu, Confuctian, Christian deserves a mention- nutters have taken over thre Muslim religion, but British Muslims say nothing- they forget they are British as they are born here, and grew up in Britain- they are British- end of story- to hear that a religion might mean more than the nation they belong to makes me furious- you are British first- Muslim second I don't like sedition, and Britain hasn't had it for a long, long, long time, really- a few hundred years- the closest Britain got to sedition was the reluctance of troops fighting US colonists in 1776 whom they considered brothers.

DL- double log in. it means someone who has been among them forever under one name logs in as a new member under a different name. I don't see the point, but finding them (DL'ers) seems to be quite the sport.
Let me be real careful here: my faith in Christ is above my love of country, but should my religion (or a wacko wing of it) implore me to do harm to innocents ( ie the crusades), or fail to denounce the kind of things the islamo-terrorists have done, I would surely denounce them myself.
two things i wonder from you. what time is it there? (1:30 am here. waiting for the kids to be sound asleep to let santa in)
and also, of what are you a student?

its becoming a little chatty here
as for style of play, i always go for empire building, i love creating the roads and the irrigation for my expanding empire and only go to war if i find a need for a resource i dont have , or in defence of the empire.

sorry
i'm all about the war. i play rome, build three cities, build roads to each neighbor, mass produce warriors and then convert them all to leigons. turn off my science and take over each neighbor in turn. actually i'm tired of doing that. i'm due for a new strategy (or CIV)

is it emperor just before Diety? anyway, one less than Diety.
I usually convert to leigons about 1000 BC. When that strategy works i can dominate until the world is covered in knights, and then i buy chivilry and do it again. I don't build wonders or libraries, i do build temples, baracks, and then do the merchant thing with marketplace and banks.
SMAC i'm all about the science, though.

wow your very lucky ..
one game took me to 100AD to find Iron or any Gunpowder .
Had a few games where no horses avaialbe either.
makes it more interesting when you need to fight to get your reasources.
would love to be able to dominate on the high levels , i usually stick to warlord level as beyond that i find it too tedious and not as much fun.
