That's the last feature I miss from CTP2. I vastly preferred the combat model there than I do in Civ4 (or 3... or 2).
Flanking units, artillery support... and the ability to kill off high-powered units through superior doctrine.
"Yes... I see you have an Uber-Killer Infantry coming to see me..."

I don't like stacks of any kind. There are other models out there such as the Panzer General series or Stategic Command.
These other games involve a strategic dimension and at the same time do not have the large stack tedium that derives from the boardgame heritage of such wargames.
IMO A unit should either be an army or a garrison. It is one unit on one square and one unit only. The size of the unit can be augmented and improved by technology and by the evolution of military recruitment and theory.
