Graphics etc problems w/ Conquest
I've re-installed, DLed all the damn Windows XP updates, and removed unused games for disk space, which I have enough of, but the game still has no lower L-screen map (it's all static and resource-fuzzy), and the lower R-screen is all multi-hue fuzz-- no Diplomacy available, etc. It also just crashed after an hour of playing.
Is it just a defective game? Or must I do something else?

Sounds like it could be a monitor problem. Search these forums first and then check with Atari tech support. I think I have heard of something similar that was monitor related and I beleive the fix involved changing some values in an ini file.

Thanks for the responses. I've had my settings on 800x600, and have had no problem with Civ III (as the game loads, it switches resolution for the game).
Should I change to 1024x768 and restart? Or do something with the color (32-bit)?
Thanks again for responding,
Lithicus

I am having the same problem, and I remember seeing it before with the original version of CIV3. I remember finding something (or maybe it just fixed itself, I don't recall) but I have spent all night searching the forums, and I can't find an answer.

Yes, Pilott, it's a very similar problem, except that the strange colorful glitches are on the small map (no map), and the lower right Diplomat/Espionage/etc screen-- I can't use it! And I contacted Atari, they recommended updating my Graphics card, which I did, but no help. So I'm pretty much stuck with just not playing the game, which sucks but I can't find any solution. I even bought another copy of the game, thinking maybe it was a defect unique to that CD, but same problem. So. . .anyone else have any ideas?

The game does not support 800. If you can handle 1024, set to that. If your monitor can't do it, then the board does have a thread on using 800.
There is a setting to force the game to use a given res or the the desktop one. It is on here some place as well. Ask Atari to give you the ini settings.

The resolution is not the problem for me. I was playing civ 3 at desktop resolution (1600x1200), now that installed the conquests upgrade, I cannot play any of them. PTW is also messed up the same way.
I wish I know what happened before, because I know I have seen this problem before.

Pilott--
I wish you knew too, because the resolution made no difference. I really don't know what to do, but it is true that the Conquests upgrade has affected civIII too (tho not as disablingly, just pastel-like glitch-patterns)-- if you or anyone have any other ideas, please pass them on!

I actually bought my version of civ3 online ( www.trygames.com) and it doesn't use a cd. now, when I try to run civ 3, it asks me to put in a cd, which I don't have. I haven't bothered getting a no cd fix for it, cuz I am just trying to get conquests to run......

Yeah, I got civIII online, too, but no problems-- yet! (still no good with Conquests)
But I wonder now if somehow the fact of having gotten civIII online may have something to do with Conquests problems--?? No idea. . .

given that both of you acquired the game via online means, it may have something to do with the C3C problems...

Houston, we seem to have a problem. . . yes, a definite pattern is emerging-- namely online DL versions-- but I still have no clues. Anyone?

Well, I contacted Trymedia games, and they did confirm the incompatibility of the DL'd ver. of CivIII Gold and any CD of Conquests. They gave me a refund on the CivIII Gold, and I DL'd CivIII Game of the Year (plain ol' CivIII works just as well) along with Conquests and everything works fine. Wish they'd make it clear on their DL site tho. That's all. Bye.

Warning - Active Mark Product
If you have purchased a store version of CIV II (which, I preume 95% of the people who own this game have) do not try and purchase the Conquest version from online. It is seemingly a hacked version that has the following problems:
A) Completley incompatible with the store bought verison (you will have to buy "Active Mark" version..this is NOT mentioned on the web site)
B) This version is not patched and CANNOT be patched.
I have requested a refund but will also dispute even though this shady company claims "A dispute will elongate the time to process your refund". Ummm...what kind of sense does this make?
This company reeks of scam. I do not understand why Firaxis would get in bed with them?
General Warning.
