Thanks Gary. Here is my turn (also mailed to JMarks)
From the writings of Jon of Sussex:
"January 31st, Year of our Lord 1141
News from the West Country - after a long seige, King Stephen has retaken Taunton from the rebel Count of Somerset. Apparently the slaughter was terrible.
There are rumours of more rebel Barons in the forests of Dean, waylaying and robbing passers by. My Lord Humphrey has ridden to Monmouth to supervise the defences, should they dare to approach our own holdings.
Saxon outlaws are roaming around the town of Medhamashtead, scaring the farmers. Many of our peaceful peasants are having to put aside their ploughs and learn instead the arts of the sword!
The savage Scots also threaten us periodically - but I don't think they can harm us this far south...
Lastly, a new road has been completed, linking Harfleur to the ancient way to Rouen. This has already stimulated trade in the town."

January 1141
The Scribe writes:
"The affair has settled down now. Proper defenses are being build in Yarmouth and roads are being built apace. There are some hostile activities near Norwich, but milord is of all confidence that nothing will come of it.
"All in all, January in the Year of our Lord 1141, will prove to be dull and cold."

After so many months of inactivity it seems that my beloved richard may soon be taking action to the uncouth barbarians and our fortifications are going fine. I hope to see some action next time the moon is right

From the writings of Jon of Sussex:
"It's a good thing that my Lord de Bohun rode to Monmouth. There was fierce fighting there to repel the rebel de Redvers. All our troops returned safely however, much enthused by their victory, by all accounts.
To the west of Hereford, our knights had further success against the Welsh. They are all becoming hardened fighting men, and I fear we shall have need of their skills before King Stephen is safe on his throne again.
Hereford, May, 1141"

Ioanes continues:
"Fields are to be planted at Norwhich to feed the hungry populus and roads too are being made. Milord, having heard a brief history of Rome, has insisted on a greater road building project. To fullfill this project, yoemen are being hired. Also, scientists are being sent abroad to learn the art of bridgebuilding. It will be many years till they return. I myself have never built a bridge, though should the time come I would be glad to partake in the first bridge raising. These bridges are in great need in milord's lands.
"Further afield, our mounted retainers are being sent abroad to recruit peoples to our lands. This mustering should bear some fruit, though many knights in our service are not exactly gentlemen. I would hate to be any peasant 'recruited' by them!

Is this game still on? Did you ever play your turn, Grothgar?
If there's no action here by 1/7/01, count me out. I'll post the de Bohun password for anyone who wants to take over.

Thanks Gary.
Jon of Sussex writes:
"September 30th, Year of our Lord 1141
Outside Monmouth, Count de Redvers raided our fields. Only after heavy losses did my lord’s retainers turn him back.
Aside from that, a quiet year. Apparently Stamford Bridge castle is nearly completed…..”

Ioanes the scribe continues:
'Milord Bigod is on the warpath again. The raiders west of Norwhich are now cowarding behind their walls. Salying forth from Castle-Rising, he took his son forth to teach him the ways of war. Having gained his trust, I am now regent of his Earldom.
'A church in Wales has been financed and will be open to service this winter. The weary peasants from miles around will be able to worship God, to whom all the praise is due.

Accidental Alliances
Gary,
I have no problem with that. Did you swap any tech or any money?
However, I don't think we should be contacting each other via the AI. This hasn't been formally agreed for this game yet, but I propose that all negotiation is handled player-to-player via email, and then just formalised via the AI.
OK everyone?
John

1142
Gary has just posted to me, and I have played my turn.
From the writings of Jon of Sussex:
"January 31st, 1142
As the castle at Stamford Bridge was finally completed, our men there drove off some mercenary bandits who tried to interfere with progress. Several members of King Stephen’s court are now enjoying some fine hunting from these splendid new quarters
My lord Humphrey has returned victorious from fighting off the rebel de Redvers outside the walls of Monmouth. We mourn the loss of many fine men that died to protect the town.
Finally, the Scots have come, bearing many gifts and pleading that the war they had declared on us was a dreadful error. In view of the sincerity of their gold we chose to believe them, and our little war is now at an end.”
File posted here and emailed to John. Those Scots aren't so bad, Gary!

Ioanes the Scribe continues:
'It doth seem do be a cold winter, but the new church has made things so much cheerier. Imigrants from all over Wales are comming, soon the population will double! My coastal possesions have finished a fortress and will concentrate on trade and groath.
'Winter holds up mylord Bigod on his tyrade, he will saly forth from his southern holdings soon enough. With even more fiersome siege weapons. Meanwhile, Yeomen were hired to plow new fields and build new roads, this investement will soon show itself worthwhile!
'This is my record as of January in the Year of Our Lord 1142.'
