Yea I remember there was an gender of "cat" as well as "fish on a tree" or something. I had changed that field to "F" at one time when I was approaching the Prince status thinking this would make me a Princess. Seeing that it didn't I changed it back.

Just the other night, I played in an MP game with Boann. So yes, there are female Civ players out there.
Over the years, there has been a few others also.
