Do you mean the old arcade game where you fly around jousting on big birds? If so not since the '80's

i think it made a skidding sound.....

You fly pterodactyls IIFC. I suck at it, though I saw some dude who could play for hours on a coin.

A buddy of mine was all in a fit for the last two days trying to find (recently released) midway classics arcade (something or other) for his gamecube. He went to/called 10 different stores and we went and picked it up yesterday at lunch. The main thing that he was excited about was Joust..but he is a strange lad.
I remember playing this in the arcade but just could not get into it, at least not as much as with missle command, defender, or asteriods.

Yup - '80s was only time i really played arcade games - it was big thing in college and grad school. once i was out of school never really played them again. I saw a reference to joust on the web and it brought back memories.

I used to play (and you flew ostriches, UR, not pterydactyls) and was decent - I broke 200,000 a couple of times. There was also the pterydactyl cheat that one could use to get millions of points - I did that once, got as close to the highest score as the game would allow (I think 9,999,999) and then killed all my guys, snagging the top entry on the game for at least a year.
Yeah, Williams Arcade Classics is a must-have for any 80s arcade fan.

I played it hundreds of times
(I had an old atari )
It was a good, though amazingly hard game
And it was really fun with 2 players... or yourself playing as two jousters simultaneously!

Oh yeah, since you only need to control how the good guys fly. Still, it's hard enough to control one.

You ride on a bird and have a lance. Your objective is to knock the bad guys off by bumping into them while flying higher.

Never plyed Joust, but I've seen it.

If you hit the pterodactyl just right with your lance you could kill it. It made a loud screech and appeared like it was electrocuted and then it died. I managed to do that once...

Yeah, a lot of fun. I think this is a game that would do well with a high-performance, 3-D remake with all of today's bells and whistles.

It was nearly impossible to do because the winged beast moved so fast. The lance had to go right in its mouth.

In the early versions of the game (yes, arcade machines went through versions) you could kill ptery after ptery quite easily (possible on wave 4 and after, up until wave ~20, when the troll gets too strong):
1. Have one of your enemies captured by the troll. The troll will hold him down while you kill the rest.
2. With the last bad guy still being held, land on the bottom-middle shelf. Wait for the ptery. He'll come out, and, while you're just standing there, he'll perfectly align his mouth with your lance. Repeat until you're freakin sick and tired of killing the stupid things, or until you get ~250 men, whichever comes first. Do not go above 255 men, as you will lose them all.

Bit me twice on Robotron: 2084, both around 25,000,000 points. I got the state record but was going for the national record.

In Robotron? Loser.
I've even broken a million points on MAME using the keyboard, difficulty level 5/extra men every 20,000 points. Not bad for a 36 year old fart.

Actually, I was talking about JOUST... I don't think I've ever played/or heard of Robotron.
I played Galaga and Joust almost exclusively
