I just got an A- in Philosophy
And I went to class only for the first week.
That course is awesome, if only life was this easy my friends.

Boosts my GPA and gives me my last required Humanities credit.
I'm applying for internships now so my GPA matters.
All of the real courses are a ton of work and actually hard, Philosophy was like recess...

How would you translate that to a Finnish fellow who has never been outside Yurop?

GPA = Grade Point Average.. those poor murricans.. worrying about their points..
Internship is harjoittelija like we have for many companies while you're studying..
credits are like opintoviikot.

It makes him more marketable even though he could care less about philosophy and it is something he will never need or put on his CV

GPA = Grade Point Average
It's a number between 0 and 4 which gives a rough approximation for how well someone does in school.
4.0 = A/A+
3.7 = A-
3.5 = B+
etc
Internship is where the school places me with a company for a period of 12-18 months (Microsoft, Sun, IBM, etc. all take interns each year from the school), and you get paid as well as work experience, and write a report. Then you go back and do your final year.
To get my BSc in Computer Science, I need X many courses from several faculties to get a "diverse" education. So I needed to take 4(!!) humanities courses (Languages, Philosophy, etc.)

The point of universities, at least in North America, is to give you a higher level of education: not just in your field, but in general. It's supposed to make you more enlightened.
That's why I've had to take courses like Economics (2 of them), Philosophy, English, History, etc. in addition to math & computer science.
If I wanted a simple programming diploma I could've gone to some crappy 2-year technical school.

Philosophy is useful in what? Being a teacher of Philosophy. What a complete piece of BS, if you ask me.

But then he'd just end up being a computer nerd, not the well rounded, deep thinking individual that will emerge, butterfly-like, after he has graduated!

That's big bunch of BS. I can take philosophy if I want to. I can take ancient folklores if I want to. No one makes me take them to get my degree. I do as I choose. You should have the same option too. After all, you are adults, you should have the power to decide what's good for you, right?

The vast majority of my courses are not directly computer related this term. Mostly math courses.
Computer Science is more math than programming...

Congratulations Asher.
My daughter also informs me that she got straight A's in her first semester at med-school.

Asher, yeah. We have lots of required math courses. But that's true what you say. That's what you need to do, get supporting courses, and mathematics is definitely supporting, vital and very relevant.

Asher is, you know, Canadian. In case you didn't know where Calgary, Alberta was...

It's not going to happen. Asher is on ignore and will remain so indefinitely. Presumably he's desperately seeking revenge for the terrible injustice of UR being made a mod, as if that was something to do with me.
That's not to say that I didn't nearly die laughing when I heard (courtesy of the proverbial "little bird").
Ming has made it clear that this sort of thing will result in restrictions, so I'm not going to put myself in the firing line for something I don't really care about.
Anyway...
Good for him getting an A- (if that's in fact what happened - as I said, he's on ignore). It's not that hard in an introductory course, but many people manage worse (you should see some of the cretins I've taught).

You sound so proud.
I have successfully figured out how to use the ignore list and will brag about it continuously, it shows I am infact learned and mature.

I don't see how it's possible to manage worse. I skipped 95% of the classes and skimread the material and wrote bullshit essays on it.
