sirotnikov- nice to see you back around...
Hmm... What happened to Dom Pedro II, I was wondering about him... He's been gone for about a year now, correct?
And Narck... I'd like to say I miss him, but he had around 6000 posts before I was even registered and hasn't been around much since- what's he doing now? Is he still in Austin?

I thought he was moving to New Orleans from Holland? Or was it from Denmark?

I recall he was quite active this summer, to the point of being into a 'Poly meet at DC (ask KrazyHorse, GP or DanS).
And he's still active at Civfanatics, where he posted yesterday.

Spank the Swede!
Anyway, thankfully I wasn't yet listed as MIA, as I'm still around, but not as active as before. Most likely will get more active, once I pick up some Civ title again. Currently playing mostly FPS.

Isn't Holland historically a subset of the Netherlands? Something like that I think. There are loads of Dutch people here that will tell us I'm sure.

Yup.
Meanwhile, I've googled the following:
Quote:
Netherlands
History
The Netherland's early history is linked with Belgium and Luxembourg; the three were known as the 'Low Countries' until the 16th century, when the present-day Netherlands' boundaries were roughly drawn. Originally the land was inhabited by tribal groups: the Germanic Batavi drained the sea lagoons while the Frisii lived on mounds in the remote north.
In the late 16th century the region's northern provinces, inhabited by recent converts to Protestantism, united to fight the Catholic Spanish rulers. Philip II of Spain sent the cruel Inquisition to enforce Catholicism, and war broke out in 1568. The revolt of the Netherlands was led by Prince William of Orange, nicknamed William the Silent for his refusal to enter into religious arguments. After 80 years of conflict Holland and its allied provinces expelled the Spaniards in 1648, and Holland became synonymous with the independent country that emerged in this corner of Europe (a bit like saying England when you mean Britain).
End of quote.
Not very revealing, is it?

Well, yes, but Holland is introduced very abruptly in the story. No clues as to the origin of it and why the Netherlands makes more sense...
Probably too subtle for me...

I would think so (it was from the Lonely Planet), but maybe we should give Hueij the opportunity to explain himself?
So Hueij, what's up with the names?

Carolus,
well, currently I have been playing through the SP campaign of MoH:AA Breakthrough, which I bought last week. Also continuing to play BF1942 MP with a few friends (mainly the BattleGroup42 and Forgotten Hope mods). Currently also playing Civ II MP with other Finnish Apolytoners/CGN'ers (that's why I picked up the Civgroup badge again). Not that much into FPS like when I was playing in a clan.

Holland is a province in the Netherlands... (Dutchland)
"Dutchland, uber allies en Dutchland" -remember the song
--
Actually, some "hollanders" actually like being called "hollanders" not all object.
--
I mean come on, I have bought Dutch pencils that state: "Manufactured in Holland" ... now of course, that might refer to the province, but that particular still leads to international confusion.
I don't really think that all dutch people care that much about the name-switching??
-
Was "The Netherlands" adopted as an official name in the last 30 years?
that might explain some of the confusion...

If I recall correctly one of Stalin's eccentricities was that he thought Holland and the Netherlands were distinct countries. Supposedly he demanded that they both be included on maps of the region.
Of course that could just be a story to show how crude and rotten the man was.

I wonder what did happen to panag. I mean, he's the worst spammer on these boards by far, and a reactionary militarist but I hope he's all right.
