I was giving you the reason I wouldn't promote hunting over farming, because it isn't a sollution.
|
Well where did this come from?! Nobody was. I am just saying that some people going out and hunting isn't that bad. Hell, some states even PAY hunters to hunt to thin out the deer population (when they get too high).

Well, you asked me to tell you what was wrong with hunting, so I told you.

There's another counter-productive example of yours. Citing the damage done to the enviornment by hunting wolves and predators to extinction while trying to downplay the damage hunt does.

You can't be this dense can you? The reason wolves and other preditors are low in numbers isn't because they are being hunted (wolf isn't a new delicasy ), but rather because preditors habitats are destroyed and they are usually killed by residential areas popping up. Wolves are going to be killed when they come near because they are a threat to kids. Deer aren't and are thus left alone.

Wolves were killed off mainly to protect cattle and sheep herds. What exactly is "dense" about Osweld's observation that the killing off of wolves resulted in an imbalance between prey and predator leading to the need to thin out deer populations?

Because his 'observation' is that wolves and predators were hunted for sport which caused the problems. That's dense. They weren't killed because some hunters wanted to have a thrill.

With all do respect, Osweld didn't mention that wolves were hunted for sport, only that they were hunted to near extinction.

That's right.
This is a branch off from my comments about why i think hunting in general is bad, that includes both sport and food hunting. And that would include hunting wolves to extinction to protect crops (which you could technically call food hunting, I guess), or out of some sort of extreme paranoia / phobia (which might aswell be called sport hunting, since it's just frivolous hunting).

That is realistic. Hunting is not a viable alternative to farming - not without a great deal of change in eating habits. It's why I would never promote hunting, even though I prefer it to farming, because it can do even more damage.

On the Imran-Osweld arguement:
Imran, you are beign thicker than the Himalayas! I honestly can not fathom how you haven't accepted Osweld's rather clearly laid out point..but what the hey.
If Peta wants to distribute something funny yet non-offensive, tey should make copies of the Simpsons episode when lisa becomes a vegeterian..specially the Troy Maclure film strip. BUt that is not militant enough for them I guess.
I myself am a proud omnivore (celebrate your heritage!). but facotry farming is horrendous, and fur farms are even worse.

Why is that sport hunting? And why is it frivolous? It is done to protect neighborhoods. Not frivolous at all, and not done for sport.

No one was ever asserting that.

Because it isn't clear. Even if people eat the food they hunt, Osweld persists in calling all hunting 'sport hunting'. Saying 'hunting for food' is only if you are starving, etc. It is silly to say that when people hunt good tasting things and eat their kill. They are hunting for food. There may be sport involved, but you can't say it is one or the other. It is both. And calling it 'sport hunting' is simply trying to make it sound worse.
