Christmas Day today, many people are doing something else.
It's a tragic event for sure. These people are dead from hydrogen sulphur poisoning according to the news.

You know that when 200 people die and it is the 4-5th item in the news it will be in either India or China, or possibly Nigeria.

Hydrogen Sulfide is a very dangerous gas. Alot of the oil wells along the coast of southern California contain HS. The stuff smells horrible; I remember when I was living in Santa Barbara the local facility that processed the oil produced by the off shore platforms had a small release of HS gas. It was a huge deal and people were warned to stay inside.
The really dangerous part is that your sense of smell goes away quickly with HS so people stop smelling the gas and think everything is ok. They die shortly there after.

Of course it's a really terrible accident. Unfortunately, given the combination of rapid industrialization with a population the scale of China's, it will be far from the last.
If you live here (or perhaps anywhere outside of the developed west) you have to adjust your "care threshold", or you will rapidly be drained of all sympathy. In the US, 15 dead in a mine accident would be a major story, here it's a routine.

H2S is the bad part of a fart. And like Oerdin said, when you can't smell it, you are as good as dead.
On the "Who cares" topic - 3 million dead in Congo in just a few years, and what is the World doing? EU sends a few 1000 troops, US almost none.

That's because Congo is where the Ebola virus comes from. If you asked me to go there, I'd request to be executed instead.

Still, 191 dead is not your average daily mining accident.
Speaking of which, the media in PRC is start doing some stuff. Like I saw a few days ago they exposed the terrible conditions and lack of safety enforcements in some of the mines. Some of the wooden columns are rotting away, and some nitwit was smoking inside a coal mine If I were working with him, I'd kill him right off the bat. That seems to be a case of justifiable homocide.

Dead
The amazing thing to me is that those dead are only part of 120,000 killed in industrial accidents this year. This seems really high. Obviously worker safety is not a high priority in the PRC.

That is really high.
Union Carbide was 30,000, right?
That's four times that every year.
