I think that if you click on the tile where you want the name to be with the right mouse button then there is an option for naming the landmark. Hm, I could be wrong...

nope you're right, its as simple as that, click on the tile, right click and "name landmark". Though you might need to have the advanced right click feature activated ?
that might be why you can't see it, its been that long since ive seen the simple feature i can't remember if its there.

I use click on tile then hit shift-N, naming landmarks is great fun in MP games and can end up with some strangely contested worthless land (naming rights are determined by who has a base closest to the landmark)
You can also use it to kind of figure out how far other players are away from you.

God, it was the little things that made this such a good game. Like when you would infiltrate another player and then piece together his map bit by bit by looking at his stuff. What other game had such splendid stuff?

Also, if you right-click around an empty map you can see where all the landmarks are.
There's a rename landmark prompt when you're within 1 square of a landmark. This is how I tend to find the 'soon sooner, and the MN is Mine.

I remember in one particularly entertaining MP game, I was paired up with Misotu.
We used to have landmark jousts across our common body of water, and terms like "CHEEKY WEE DEVIL" and "VAIN EASE RESEARCH BASE" and "*snigger*" would come up.
Another possibility is to find out which direction your enemy is coming from and name a landmark there saying "IF YOU CAN READ THIS WE'RE" (new landmark) "ALREADY ATTACKING YOUR FLANKS". Worth it for a laugh at least.

It is great fun-- as is naming bases and units. The best base name was " Look Behind You" for a mind controlled base behind an enemy's front lines. ( I think someone else used that basename first in CIV2)
In a game with Mongoose I finally renamed a base of his I captured Tobruk since I had to capture it twice. I hoped, as in WW2 that I could hold it from then on but the base was destroyed.
AS for landmarks I name them all sorts of things. " Come through these straits and Die" was a favorite while in a recent game I saw an opponent with a troopship loaded with a probe so I did 2 landmarks pointing to my nearest base and offering " Wine , Women and song".
I also stuck up no tresspassing signs on my borders when other players kept crossing my frontiers. Another player then put the word " banana" on all his borders.
Overall its a very fun feature of MP games- I love the taunts and back and forth although I usually don't get into it unless I know the other player(s) have a sense of humor about things-- The most I ever did it was was in a duel ( I think with Drago Sinio but my memory could be faulty). My opponent actually started it even though he was being invaded. he pointed a long arrow to his coast with the text " Suggested landing site"-- I hit elsewhere but a second wave hit his suggested beach and I renamed the landmark something like " Thanks for the suggestion"

I remember in a LAN game my friend named a patch of deep sea, so I got my formers and built a land bridge out to it then raised a 3500 mountain - but kept the name

It's mildly amusing to conduct an egomaniacal naming frenzy. Name everything after yourself!
Or just to be annoying in games I simply rename everything to have the same name.
-GREAT- fun when the __ at __ is attacking __, so you have to get your __ from __ to counterattack __.
Just to be confusing, I like to landmark certain squares with "26.50" or "1.4" When those are nothing like the real co-ordinates. I do this with bases too.

"Don't feed the mindworms" on a patch of fungus was amusing.
"Friends are always welcome, enemies will be slaughtered"
"The glorious Hive army awaits you"
"Slave girls go east, enemy spies go west"
"If you can see this i will shoot myself next turn"
"you've just tripped the switch!!" .. "planet busters armed"
"filthy *insert appropriate insult and faction* -> "
If you're losing a war badly or winning it easily rename a large patch of land "France"

My SP landmarks are usually quite dull and utilitarian. If a sealurk is seen to arrive at a certain point along the shoreline, it is noted along with the year at that point -- that way I have a constant reminder to keep at least a minimal watch in that direction.

I name landmarks just to entertain myself, after places I've lived, places I'd like to live, and places whose names just sound cool.
For example, I always have either "Vermont" or "Green Mountain".

Hmmm, I've only named re-name landmarks if something special happens there. Like if there is a huge battle going on, I'll rename it to something like "Hallowed Ground" or "Memorial Vista".
Disastrous areas get named appropriately like, "Slaughterhous Hill" or "MindWorm Plains" if a morass of worms destroys my units in that location.

Another completely bland use I have for landmarks is to make sure the bases are laid out in the precise every-fifth-square grid I favor. I switch the cursor the veiwing squares, count out five from my first base, and plop down the landmark title " site". I then count out another five in another direction, etc, until I've done about two dozen of the buggers.
Almost invariably, when a unit finally uncovers a given "site", it's rocky and fungus covered.

I send probe teams or (if I don't have PTs and am not rushing an SP) alien artifacts first -- they don't upset the natives near as much.
Just don't pop pods with an artifact.
