Who would win? 1942 Germany vs. 2001 France?
Who would win in this dream matchup?

France 2001. They know their enemy, they have the tools, and they have the motivation.

Football or open warfare?
(I'll probably have to explain the difference to English fans. )

Well germany in 1942 already won against france in 1940, so the chances that 2003 france winning in this matchup(which would already be under the boot) are slim to none.

This assumes the German army from 1942 is meeting the French army of 2001 on neutral territory. The German forces are commanded by Von Manstein. The French forces are commanded by some cool French general dude with a twirly mustache.

Germany 1942 would probably have a tough time beating even Iraq 2003. The benefits of modern technology cannot be overemphasized.

OK... we all love to mock the French...
But get over it! What's a FW-190 supposed to do against a Mirage? And a Panzer 4 J against well... some kind of modern armor? Their only chance would be to paradrop someone and cut Paris from that rubber tile
I think allowing for the banana would have made this poll more... relevant.

Oh yeah, I forgot. One of the rules is no nukes.
The other rule is no Swedish mercenaries.

Its not like anyone would attack for the purpose of grabbing their oil.

Hell no. I've seen postwar studies saying that the German Army circa '42 would be able to stomp Iraq. (Iraq had poor training, near total lack of radios, piss poor doctrine). The German Army, by contrast, had a thorough grasp of combined arms, radios in every tank, trained well.

And will still lose. Their tanks will eat it during the sandstorms, they mostly can't have air superiority, and RPGs work against German tanks.

Why? You think the Iraqi tanks don't "eat it" during sand storms? You think the Wehrmacht doesn't have more tanks than Iraq has RPGs?

You guys are so literal. I was exagerating. I meant probably the Germany of 1942 would have a relatively tough time beating a force from some large third world army, like an Iraq or even a Cuba. Maybe not those particular countries (and since this is all theoretical anyways, its not like it could be proven, and the outcomes of wars can at times be determined through largely circumstantial and arbitrary means anyways) but insert the name of your favorite third world army here, and Germany could likely be beaten by them, whereas against a respective modern army from even just a moderately armed nation like Canada and it would be a steamroller operation, because of modern technology. I don't think it can be overemphasized.

But to be honest, I would probably bet Germany 1942 would beat Iraq... the Iraqi army was really really bad. Unless of course they effectively utilized unconventional tactics like terrorism, biological warfare, suicide attacks, etc.
But who know? If Germany 1942 was smart, they could just as easily win.

You're giving France too hard a time. Now, something like 100AD Rome vs. 2001 France, that's an even match.

Germany would probably culture flip France.
