Hack'n'Slash? Action RPG then?
Dink Smallwood is a decent freeware RPG with a straight-forward action control system. If you prefer more substance and turn-based control I quite enjoyed the freeware console-styler Laxius Power, which also has a sequel I've yet to play.

Try Ancient Domains of Mystery (a search for ADOM should bring it up as th first result). It's free, has quests and a storyline, and is amazingly complex.

hack 'n slash, not run, eat, run, kill, eat, walk, eat, eat, eat, starve to death.
just finished downloading Dink Smallwood, going to look at ADOM

Dink Smallwood is too cartoony, but I'll keep it in my to play " pile"
ADOM looks promising from the few minutes I just played of it, but I think I was being too vague when I said graphics arent an issue, I meant that they can be crappy and thats alright but a stick figure would be better than text (Im trying to avoid thinking too much right now, hence wanting a hack 'n slash)
going to try Laxius Power now.
thanks for the suggestions by the way

Pool of Radiance 2? No story, just kill stuff. OK there is a story, you have to kill everyone, so you can get to the boss and kill him too...

Questron and Questron 2, both by SSI. Phantasie I-III too. I am not sure who owns the SSI copyrights now, though.

Why? It's just names, remember.
Anyways, there's the obvious suggestion of Diablo. Dungeon Siege is another good hack'n'slash. Neverwinter Nights should do the job, too - I'm sure there are a ton of dungeon crawl modules.

I need to be able to download them though, i dont want to wait a week for it to arrive in the mail.
I refuse to play Diablows on the grounds that when my friend returned Civ2 to me he told me it sucked and asked if I had ever played Diablo, and went on to tell me how great it is.

You're asking for hack'n'slash and you refuse to play Diablo?

That is assuming ANY hack and slash RPG is 'any good' .

Diablo sucks. The controls are wonky, the story is crap and the graphics are really horrible. For a real Hack-n-Slash get a SNES emulator and Sword of Mana or its sequel Seiken Densetsu 3.

It's Secret of Mana, not Sword of Mana.
Icewind Dale is good if you want a hack'n'slash with a bit more story, too.

I can't believe I got that wrong when I amazingly managed to spell Seiken Densetsu right!
Ironically there's actually a game called Sword of Mana, basically a sequel to the ones above on the GBA.

You're not trying to download Laxius Power on a modem are you? You're going to need a set of libraries as well, that's another equal-size package... Might wanna go for the emulator or nethack clones instead eh?

Isn't that beeping buggy? Like the Temple of Elemental Evil (without patches)
I'd recommend Icewind Dale II (I purchased it for 8 dollars)
Icewind Dale I is going for 9 at the local discount store
