Korean Airlines B747 (1983?) downed by Soviet fighter jets - the Soviets claimed it was on a spy mission, but it had lots of passengers on board. Probably confused with an US RC135 recon plane and therefore shot down. I´m sure there are a lot of conspiracy theories about this one out there
|
it was KAL (korean airlines) flight 007, flying fron NY/Kennedy to Seoul/Gimpo via Anchorage.
http://www.rescue007.org/chronology_detailed.htm
it's obvious the plane was filled with spies from her majesty's secret service.

Not the train stuff, the police. It seems that they had some information about that someone would travel the train.

The KAL flight also had a US Congressman on it, Larry McDonald (D-GA).

Well, Mitterrand's top advisor told a few years back (after his retirement from politics) that there were indeed spies in the flight and that the Americans expected the Soviets not to shoot down the plane.
I don't know if it's true, but I see nothing ludicrous with this assertion. At the contrary, it seems rather like a sound strategy to me. It's terrible so many lives were lost in this attack

The baby was probably named Mohammed.

The odds on that is probably very low. Mohammed is the most common name for new-born boys in Sweden's third town Malmö.

No, we have lists of people who are suspected of terrorists. I suppose when a match is noticed you would rather just smile and let them on?

Yes, that's what I was getting at. Mohammed is such a common Arabic name, being named Mohammed would make your name "similar" to half of al-Qaeda.

Actually, the US security services whined as we cancelled flights they informed us of being suspicious. I guess they prefer to risk lives in order to catch terrorists

Back in Nam it was a common occurance for the VC to stuff babies with grenades. We just did what we had to do.

Apparently the US routinely violated Soviet airspace in those days. Remember, it was "winnable nuclear war" Reagan at the helm and Andropov at the other. Sometimes I marvel at the fact that we made it out of the era with the world intact.
From what I read in the papers at the time, the KAL flight being used by the U.S. as a spy plane was not implausible.
The alien theory sounds like BS.

The whole idea of airspace is ridiculous. You should be able to shoot down planes no matter where they're flying.

The real problem is that names were not accompanied with physical descriptions or photographs.

The ocean liner Lusitania. While it has never been conclusively shown the ship was carrying arms, it is probable that she was. Not just supplies, mind you--munitions. The Lusitania was blown almost in half by a single torpedo. Meanwhile, her identical sister ship Mauretania took over 10 torpedoes of the same time when it got caught in a battle and yet stayed afloat just fine...

I don't think the police has physical descriptions or photographs for every citizen, especially those that have never commited any crime.
Besides, in the case of terrorists and maffia bosses, we can expect that police archives are outdated because of facial surgery.

They'll soon have. Foreigners who travel to the US from Jan 05th on will be photographed and fingerprinted for "security reasons".
Of course, citizens from 27 countries are exempt from that humiliation. Mostly Europeans.
