well, I have had only two easy games on emperor, the one city challenge one and one where I took over world by 550 AD (than I went on to try DemiDiety where I lost)
getting them to fight early is important
also having two nations with me, and one by themselves also helped I beleive
and getting all the double tech wonders was crucial
I also think that your starting position has be a decent, like have a lux that can be grabbed or a river, or special resources
