Don't know yet, but I am starting to like the Celts. China was a fav, but I have not used it in C3C so far.
Mayan is not too bad either.

			1. Japan (gotta love Mil/Rel and Samurai. The ultimate in conquest and cultural consolidation)
 2. Mayans (quicker irrigation, cheaper granaries, bonus food in capital. Can easily spread like The Plague)

 3. China (Mil/Ind is still a favourite combo for me. Riders fire up a well-timed golden age and can conquer territory much faster than anyone at the time except the Arabs)

 4. Germany (nearly as good as Japan at cultural consolidation of conquered territory. That and the utter coolness surrounding Germany in general)

 5. Rome (again, coolness factor. Plus a good UU to boot)

Are any of the new CIV's in conquests any good. With two of these as caracteristics like industrious, militaristic, expansionists, or commercial. It seems Mayans are popular. I can't wait til I get conquests like next week or something. I have some other favorites that I use but my 5 still stay the same.

			From Civ3
Japan - reliable with good traits and UU

 From PTW

Ottomans - industrious (when it was the best trait) and possibly the strongest UU going

Carthage - industrious (not in C3C) and a UU that lasted until riflemen

 From C3C

Dutch - agricultural and seafaring so something for any map and another good UU

Sumeria - agricultural (scientific is a pretty good second trait) and a UU that gives half price spearmen so you can build plenty of horsemen to attack.

I really like my 2 C3C choices and will always have a fondness for Japan as the first civ I really did well with. My PTW choices aren't as good in C3C but still not poor civs by any means.

			Aztec, Maya, Inca, Germany, Sumer.
Before I got C3C, I usually played as Aztec. I haven't played as Maya yet. I liked playing Sumer in the Mesopotamia conquest. I played Mesoamerica as Inca three times. I expanded the city name lists for Germany, Scandinavia, England, Spain, and America with names I have a connection to, but so far I've been playing as the Germans against the others. I haven't played as most of the available civs, and I think there are some I haven't played against yet, or at least had much contact with. I don't care so much about the Traits of the civs, I mostly care about exoticness or genealogical connection. I suppose I should pay more attention to the Traits.

			1. Maya (Agricultral + Industrious + enslaving Javs + Barb farming = extreme expansion and production)2. Byzantines (just had good luck with 'em; Seafaring is good, too)
 3. Aztecs (when I want to be a little more warlike early on and still expand quickly)
 4. Mongols (did really well with them in a PTW game once with Keshik assaults)
 5. Japan/China (tied; generally good warmongering Civs in my book)

Can I buck the trend and just say my favourite from each stage in the civ3 saga
Vanilla civ3 its the Romans for me every time, in fact I'd bet 90% of my games were played as the Romans pre PTW.

PTW saw 8 new civs and the one that really interested me and still does was the Celts, gotta love that Gallic Swordsman. Even better now in c3c, or so I believe
In C3C, so far I think its the Byzantines, though a little too early to tell for sure. Great traits and an excellent early naval unit.

Other civs that stand out for me are the Egyptians, Persians and the Babylonians, all from the original. I really like the Arabs and the Ottomans from PTW.

I suppose my favoured historical period is ancient times around the med and the middle east, hence most of my choices

My favorite from Civilization 3 No Bloody PTW or C, is the Aztecs, with the Germans as the runner up. My favorite from PTW is the Scandinavians. For C3C, it's the Incas so far.

Well, I'll be the first schmuck to put this one on my list.
Spain. The UU is extraneous, it's about the traits.
Not my #1 fav, but definitely a strong trait combo, IMO.

For the other 4? Umm...
Carthage - Like someone else said, build your spearmen once and keep 'em until Muskets at least, maybe Rifles. Nice. The Seafaring boni are nice too. And Industrious? Super nice.
Celts - the PtW Celts - haven't tried C3C yet, but GSs just rock. If I don't have horses, these little red-headed stepchildren will go get them for me no matter how much I tease them about their pants.
Egypt - I love Industrious(or did) and this was my first full-epic Civ - an obvious newbie choice, but still strong
Japan/China - 6 of one, half a dozen of the other. Great Chivalry UUs, good traits.

Edit: Hang on a minute...

			ByzantinesScandinavia
 Spain
 Portugal
 Carthage

(I'm not sure if it's hinted at by the above list, but I'm addicted to Seafaring.)

The Busys and the Vikings make the top because of the Dromon and Berserker, which make naval bombardment and amphibious war, respectively, available much eariler in the game, opening up whole new methods of warfre, rather than just being another '+1 attack' or '+1 defence' variant unit.

			1) Persia-Immortals after Iron researching-then take some cities2) Japan- Barracks and Temples cheap-Sams dominate
 3) Carth-If you have Ivory nearby--research Math and build the T of Z
 4) Rome-Leg. are great early offence-defence
 5) Celts--I like warring, and the Gallic ability to move fast can assist with quick attacks

I haven't played enough to come up with a top five, but for now, my favorite so far has been the Iroquois.
Agricultural (growth is good), Commercial (so is money/lower corruption/starting with the alphabet for a shot at the philo beeline), with a kickass UU. It's a beautiful thing.

Like Arrian, I haven't played C3C enough yet to really come up with a current list.
Some that intrigue me, though, are:

Byzantines - Played one game, Dromons rock, and the traits are good for... anything, really.

Celts - Haven't played with the lower-cost UU... looks to be unbelievable.

My PTW list would have been:
Rome
Persia
China
Japan

aaaaaaand....

Scandinavia

America - I can't get past the brilliant ability to avoid my GA until later in the game when it will pay off far more than it would do early on, whatever the UU and traits.
Rome - Legionaries will beat anything until Muskets if you throw enough at them, and they have that awesome defense/attack dual role.

Byzantines - Like Theseus, I was deeply impressed with the Dromons and their lethal bombard, even if their use is very situational.

If you get as far as theur UU the Vikings are very destructive.

Finally Egypt for those wonderful Industrious/Religious traits, and for all those fond memories of the first Democracy Game. |

Right now, my LEAST favorite is Inca. Agricultural/Expansionist on a large continent map (and there were rivers) made it WAY too easy (Regent)!
