Props to the Nasa crew!
Tho it doesn't matter who put it there, what matters is that it is there. Scientific knowledge belongs to all mankind.

Um, grey picture of... rocks? Woot?
What is the purpose of this mission?

Well, you probably don't need them to open the beer bottles.

Throw them against hard objects? I have found the ground more than adequate for the task. Not only that, but it improves the flavour somewhat.

The important thing is that everybody got together beforehand and came to an agreement. Wonderful things happen when people learn to share. I motion that we nickname this craft "The Fred Rogers".

Dust and solar panels
The dust doesn't just settle on the surface. It hits at high speed and actually pits the surface. This kind of damage cannot be fixed easily.

I just hope the Martians don't think we're renewing the war. Last time they almost kicked our asses.

Japan 0, UK 0, USA 2
In all the Euro bashing, every one seems to forget that the Japanese craft Nozumi failed before it reached Mars. It was apparently incapacitated by solar radiation and would not respond to the steering commands necessary to make it orbit Mars.

tracking the history of water on mars(life, setting up colonization efforts, etc). They landed it near a dried out lake with a dried out stream running through it.

Oh please. Our technology has advanced significantly since then. If the Martian wars were to occur today, it would be an entirely different scenario.

Not true, I said the CIA was responsible for both probes failures :P. Considering that the US is the only country with sucessful landings on mars it doesn't seem that far fetched does it .

Get out the tinfoil hats
Your post of CIA! CIA! CIA! was totally without context. I had no idea what you were referring to. And no, it wasn't the CIA, it was the little green men who have had a secret alliance with the US since we faked the moon landings.

Looking for evidence of water by looking at sediment, or some such.

Later this afternoon. Very high resolution. I think these are at least 15 megapixel pictures coming down.

Outstanding. Now that we have conquered poverty and no child goes without food, shelter and medicine we can begin our exploration of space...
Oh wait a second..

What this thread needs is for someone to make a really obvious attempt at threadjacking it. If only someone could think of an irrelevant issue to discuss...
