"Treihadwyl" rings a bell. Let's see...... (used to play HEAPS of RPG's in my younger years)

The Four of Travere?

I think that's the name. Something like that. In the game you had to mix runes and items in a mixing bowl to make the spells.

EDIT: I googled to check the name. "Four Crystals of Trazere", or "Legend" in some areas. The above was a legit guess though.

We almost have a winner, and since I am so sick of waiting for someone to get this, Dale can have it!

The game was called The Four Crystals of Trazere in the US, and Legend in Europe. It was released by Mindscape in 1991 and was utterly great! If you search for it on Google then you'll find that it is available for download on many websites, but since I am unsure of their legality, I shan't link to any of them. The game had four characters: a berzerker, a troubadour, an assassin and a wizard, who had to mix his own spells from a selection of ingredients and a range of different runes.

If you want to see screenies and for more info then visit this page. It's not a download site.

[edit]Just to get extra weird, I'm editing this page to point out that I started typing the main post before Dale edited his, so he's a legitimate winner! [/edit]

The screenshot in the picture on the site I linked to is the first room of the second level in the first dungeon. That was a toughie if you didn't know what you were going into because you had to collect four keys to open the various locks and get the certificate of beating the dungeon out to take to the king in the second city. He'd then hire you to do missions, etc. Three of the keys were really easy, and you'd just pick them out of treasure chests and things, but the last one was a right bugger because you had to cast a fireball spell (mixed the right way, of course) across the water in the room to flick a switch and that would give you a bridge to cross. Then you'd choose to use another character, have them run across the bridge to get the key before firing another spell to let them back across. And this was on the very first level! I remember seeing that particular puzzle on several hints and tips pages in magazines following the release of Legend.
Great game!

I can see the screen (maybe not of this game, but certainly of the game it reminds me of).

If I get another chance at this then I'm very tempted to choose The Shoot-em-up Construction Kit.
Anyone remember that?
Anyone actually buy it? Apart from, er, me that is?

No it's not Indy, Wolfenstein or Commando.

Clue 2: The game is actually different for each of the 3 platforms mentioned above, but the same concept and characters.

Short Circuit?

Wait that was a movie, not a game.

It was also a game, and is, I suspect, the answer.

I didn't really win because I had no idea there was ever a Short Circuit game, my guess was solely based on the movie.

Wasn't really ready but here's a placeholder clue:

It was a software platform and had colors in it.

The first REAL clue:

This game was loosely aligned with a whole bunch of games based on a theme, but this had a unique take on the theme.

It had three distictive playstyles, that is it was for all pratical purposes three different games and you play them individually or together (full game).

Not Oink.

It had an rpg element, a strategic conquest element, and a tactical combat element. They didn't flow together well but I like the game. Course I had read all the books on the theme that the game was based on.

Not Infiltrator.

Its medieval in theme, with politics and intrigue weighing behind most of the plots and gameplay for both the books and the game.
