Yeah, as Endier I would work at taking control of foreign provence's Trade Guilds and use that influence to overthrow and annex them.
The one your talking about started heavy in magic if I remember and its tactics tended to warrant building Ley lines and such and using that as its influence base.
Gosh its been awhile since I played the game, just went and bought it on Ebay yesterday for under $10 with shipping so I'll get to play it some more.

It's something like Cold Steel, but that's not it.

Ghengis:
Yeah, it was strong in magic. I used to go the mage as primary character (so he could go up levels) and buy a fighter, dwarf and cleric for adventuring. That's where I found the best part of the game was, the RPG's.
Back to the game:
No, not CtP, but duke is on the right track.
Clue:
Playing as one of two sides, the game covered Europe and north Africa. This was also one of my personal favourite games for a long time.

Nope, not A&A either. Though again, on the right track.
Clue 3:
The aim of the game was to elliminate the other side before Jan 1st 1946. However, if you were the "evil" side then you could also win just by surviving. A Deluxe edition was released two years after the original and enhanced the game further and adding Windows 95 support.

Yay A game I've never played, but heard discussed before on another site. DoY's steel thing made me think he might be onto something
Ok, my go then
Clue one: One of the first games I ever played. Released in the late 80s by Sega. Was pretty revolutionary for the time, and has spawned quite a few sequels/spin-offs.

No to all. The clues will get easier, I just didn't want to give it away very early.
Clue one: One of the first games I ever played. Released in the late 80s by Sega. Was pretty revolutionary for the time, and has spawned quite a few sequels/spin-offs.
Clue two: There were some quite advanced (for the time) animation in the cut sequences, that had definite Anime influences (if not actually considered Anime).
Incorrect guesses: Golden Axe, Sonic the Hedgehog, Outrun, Double Dragon, Blades of Steel, Gauntlet, Final Fantasy I...
