That was the obvious one!
This 1990 game had the opportunity to buy improvements for your racer though, with cash earned by driving.

No, no.
Some of the best levels in this game were slightly slower than the others (depending upon whether you knew the track as well as I did ), because you didn't have a very good view of the track. Still, the owl was in control all the way!

Yeah - driving along at night with only two triangles of sight was a blast! When you were doing the night-time tracks for the first time it made sense to hang back a bit so that you had the advantage of the competitors' headlights too.
Mind you, I don't think that there were oil patches on the track in the night stages - that would have made things very difficult.
ADG - your turn!
More info, and screenshots

well done ADG - i was going to guess wrongly again
The cover art on the Nitro game box looks exactly like the cover art for the steve jackson board game 'car wars'(it was also used on the fighting fantasy book by the same author).

Woohoo... I didn't play this game much, so I didn't remember that you could pick something up from the ground... and didn't know the 'Owl' was behind this game also...
Give me a few minutes (or more) to find a game

Clue 1:
Even though this is not an RTS game, BHG might have got an idea from this game...

Well it was real time, and strategy, but it wasn't RTS, if that makes sense.

If it's both real time and strategy, then it's rts... or am I missing something here?
But no, it's not The Settlers...

Well literally it's RTS, but RTS has come in popular useage to mean a specific *type* of RTS, namely the C&C style.
But my answer was wrong, so let's move on.
I'll pump for the obvious given the stuff he nicked from the Civ series.
Civ?

Ahh... when I'm talking about RTS, I'm talking about : RTS or RT S... the C&C type games goes under the first one, for lack of strategy...
But no, it's not Civ either... and by BHG I mean: Big Huge Games

Yeah I got that, but thought it meant a RoN feature that had been stolen from somewhere else.

Yes, that's partly what I ment... though they didn't exactly take a feature and implement it, they just 'took' a feature from this game, changed a lot (to make it useable for RoN)... but the general idea is still there... Next clue coming up later today...

I have never played Rise of Nations so I have no idea what you're going on about. Can we have a more accessible clue please? You know, for those of us who still play Civ 2.

Clue 2:
The creators of this unique game have a history of creating unique games, but they were never* good at creating sequels...
* Well... they managed to make 1 good sequel (compared to the original)

Vague as a vague thing called vague, being very vague
ADG who wrote the rules on posting ?
i'll guess 'Conquest' from the 90's(16bit+8bits) , it involved conquest of other nations like in RoN
EDIT: ok i was posting BEFORE the next clue was given, so ignore my jibes

Duke: Hmm, the first answer sounds more likely to me. Since we can only accept that one it's just as well.
Is it Powermonger 2?
